Hosting neighbors for a meal means having something to serve, so we’ll help you learn how to cook. You can customize each recipe, and we’ll guide you to choose what’s best to suit your neighbors’ tastes.
How to Cook Recipes
Your cozy hobbit hole has a kitchen and a pantry. The pantry is where you store all your home-grown ingredients, while the kitchen is where the cooking happens.
In the kitchen, you can see all the recipes you know, along with the ingredients and seasonings you have to make your dishes special. When you start out, you’ll only have a basic setup—a frying pan and a cutting board.
As you progress, you’ll unlock more stations, allowing you to cook even more impressive meals! You can carefully pick which ingredients to use for each dish, considering their flavor and texture, to create the perfect meal for your guests. Better ingredients mean a higher star rating for your dishes.
Serving high-quality meals that satisfy your guests’ cravings will earn you more friendship points.
Ingredients can be obtained by gardening or shopping. Here are some merchants where you can find what you need:
- Farmer Cotton (Seeds and Gardening Plots): Offers various seeds daily and new gardening spaces, sometimes fully-grown crops.
- Tom Cotton (Animal Products): Sells meats and dairy from the market, next to his prize cow.
- Sandyman (Grain and Flour): Finds flour and oats needed for many recipes at his mill to the northeast.
Getting to know your neighbors and helping them out unlocks more recipes for you to learn.
What Are Flavors?
There are five main flavors, and ten different flavor combinations. These flavors give each dish its unique character since no two dishes are exactly the same. The flavors include:
- Sweet (Purple)
- Salty (Blue)
- Spicy (Red)
- Bitter (Grey)
- Sour (Green)
Balancing these flavors with ingredients can create fancy flavor combos! You can check your encyclopedia to see each ingredient’s flavor, indicated by color around the border of its icon. This helps you know what the dish will taste like without extra adjustments.
What Are Textures?
There are four textures your food can have, and each recipe has an ideal ‘sweet spot’ to earn the ‘textured’ label. Finished dishes can be:
- Smooth
- Chunky
- Crisp
- Tender
Different cooking stations can influence texture; for example, using a frying pan will tend to make ingredients more tender.
What Are Seasonings?
Seasonings are used to change or enhance ingredients’ flavors, impacting the overall taste of your dish. When most ingredients share the same flavor, the dish will reflect that flavor more strongly.
You can buy seasonings like salt, sugar, pepper, and lemon from Hobson Hornblower’s stall at the market. Using the right seasonings helps you craft delicious, well-balanced meals.
