While developing your island community in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, part of the fun is inviting and sharing your space with cute animal neighbors. With over 400 villagers available in the game, you’re likely to have a few favorites you’d like to see move in.
There are several ways to invite new villagers to your island. Here’s what you need to know about each method. The main question now is: which villagers do you want to invite?
Every Way to Invite New Villagers to Your Island
Once you upgrade Resident Services to a proper building, you’ll unlock the Campsite and choose where to place it. The day after it’s built, your first camper will arrive.
Visitors at the Campsite
After upgrading Resident Services, you can craft the Campsite and pick its spot. When built, you’ll get your first camper the next day. From then on, campers will show up from time to time. You can talk to them and invite them to live on your island, though sometimes you might need to win a card game to get them to accept. If you don’t win, keep chatting—they might suggest playing again, and you can keep trying until they propose a game.
Playing cards can also earn you clothing or furniture items.
If the island already has ten villagers and a new camper arrives, they may suggest one of your current villagers move out to make room. If they pick someone you’d prefer to keep, decline or don’t accept their suggestion, then restart the game without saving. Revisit the campsite and invite the camper again; they will then select a different villager to suggest moving. Repeat this process until they suggest someone you’re willing to part with.
Use Amiibo Cards
At Resident Services, you can access the Nook Stop machine and select the “Invite A Camper” option. Using Amiibo Cards, you can invite specific villagers directly to your campsite. They’ll appear the following day and stay there until you talk to them. However, they won’t move in immediately—you’ll need to complete a DIY request for them (if you don’t have the recipe, they’ll give it to you).
To get them to move into your island, you need to invite the camper multiple times—specifically, three visits—by continuing to complete their DIY tasks. Once you’ve done that, they will agree to move in.
Mystery Island Tours
Visit the Nook Stop at Resident Services and spend 2,000 Nook Miles to buy a Nook Miles Ticket. Use this ticket at the airport to travel to a Mystery Island. There’s a chance you’ll find a villager walking around who may be willing to move to your island. Remember, villagers will only appear if you have a vacant plot available to move into.
Friend’s Islands
You can also visit the islands of friends from the airport. If one of their villagers is in the process of moving out (with belongings in boxes), you can ask them to join your island.
Vacant Plots
If your island has a vacant plot—either because it’s new or a villager recently moved out—then a new villager will usually move in automatically within a couple of days.
When Do Villagers Move In?
Villagers arrive either naturally or through invitations. If you have an open plot, they typically move in within one or two days. When inviting from other islands or via the Campsite, they usually move in the day after they agree to join.
Maximum Number of Villagers
Your island can host up to ten villagers at once, including you. Basically, it’s like your personal top eight list—except with animal neighbors.
