Vending machines have been a staple in Borderlands from the very start, and Borderlands 4 has an entire quest focused on them. The quest, called Vend Of The Line, challenges players to find hidden vendors scattered around Carcadia Burn and decode their clues. The goal is to locate a legendary, ultimate vending machine—if it even exists, of course.
This quest can be tricky because it’s more of a puzzle than the typical shooting and loot collection gameplay. If you’re having trouble, this guide has all the clues and solutions in one place so you can progress smoothly.
How To Start The Vend Of The Line Mission in Borderlands 4
Once you’ve restored power to Carcadia City during the Unpaid Tab mission, you’ll come across Penelope Streams interviewing a hopeful adventurer near a vending machine on the south side of the main street. Talk to them, then head behind the vending machine to find crossed-out dollar signs painted on its back.
These symbols tell you to sell items to the machine in a specific order based on their rarity—starting with two uncommons (green) followed by two rares (blue). You must open the vending menu and sell each item individually, in the correct sequence. If you mess up, don’t worry—using the buyback option to reset will cost some money but allows you to try again.
When you sell everything correctly, the machine will glitch out and reveal the locations of other coded vending machines. These are marked on your map once the quest is tracked.
How to Activate the Vending Machine at Embracer’s Bluff
The second vending machine is south of Carcadia’s Lopside region, near Embracer’s Bluff. It’s just east of Makeshift Chalet, in the same village where the Potty Mouth quest begins. The machine is against a shack, so you won’t see the symbols right away. Climb into the shack through a hole near the roof, then break the boards blocking your view of the symbols. The sequence here is green, purple, blue, purple—selling items in that order will give you the second code fragment.
How to Activate the Vending Machine Near Carcadia City
The third vending machine is in the ruined section of Carcadia City, close to the first one. Leave the main hub and head counterclockwise to a plateau south of the area. You’ll find an old hotel with an in-ground pool. Clear out any enemies and listen for music from a jukebox nearby.
The vending machine is tucked in a corner on the upper floor of the building. You can examine it, but to activate it, you need to turn off the jukebox generator by flipping its switch. Be careful—there’s an electrified pool nearby that deals Shock damage. Once the generator is off, notice that the dollar signs are no longer crossed out. Instead of selling items, buy them back in the order: green, purple, blue, green. You can sell all your junk first, then buy them back in that sequence to get the code.
How to Activate the Vending Machine at Crumblehall
The last coded vending machine is in a small village called Crumblehall, southwest of Carcadia City. The easiest way is through the caves, but you can also reach it from the southeast. When you arrive, find the overturned vending machine on top of a Vault Gatherer—in the village, under a toppled machine on top of a Vault Gatherer.
The machine has arrows painted on its back, which point upward when it’s upright. Climb onto some nearby boxes, then use the stairs to glide onto the platform above. From there, look through the window to see the code. Here, you don’t need to sell anything—instead, tell the Vault Gatherer the correct sequence, and he will do the selling for you.
How to Unlock the Legendary Vending Machine
After decoding all four machines, your character will automatically receive the coordinates to the Legendary Vending Machine: the Dusty Dangler, a dive bar on a hill along the shore east of Carcadia City. It’s full of Rippers, so clear them out first. Inside, look for a vending machine.
One Ripper is sure to drop a Legendary weapon for your quest, but it’s wise to bring a spare just in case. You probably have some lower-level Legendaries stored in your bank.
The Dusty Dangler’s vending machine requires you to buy one item of each rarity—green, blue, purple, and orange—in that order. When you do, a hidden door at the bottom of the cliff by the water opens. Inside, you’ll find a semi-boss machine. Use corrosion or cryo damage to weaken its armor. Once defeated, the machine turns into a normal vending machine, which only stocks Legendary weapons for $1 each.
What Does the Legendary Vending Machine Do?
This vending machine exclusively offers Legendary weapons and sells them for just $1 each. After one purchase, it shuts down permanently, allowing you to choose a single Legendary free of charge. It cycles its stock every 30 minutes, so if you don’t find what you want right away, you can wait and try again. Once you make your selection, buying the weapon is final, and you’ll need to hunt for Legendaries the usual way going forward.
