MIO: Memories In Orbit is a great example of how small parts of a bigger plan can combine to help you take down tougher opponents. Early on in your journey, you’ll face a perfect example — the Flora boss, also known as the Sentient Pearltrap.
If you haven’t been practicing the double jump and using it to connect attacks at various heights, this boss will teach you quickly about aerial combat. The first phase introduces you to this experience slowly, but by the second phase, your jumping and attack skills will be pushed to their limits.
How to Find and Defeat Flora in Phase One
To reach Flora, go through the door to the right of the Attuner save point into the Feral Undergrowth area. Follow the lower path, cross a toxic lake, and keep heading downward until you enter Flora’s lair.
This boss fight will test your jumping and Hairpin skills the most. You need to pay close attention to Flora’s movements to dodge effectively.
Tip: You can jump into the fight early and land some hits before Flora starts attacking. Not every hit will damage the boss immediately since damage only counts once Flora’s HP bar begins to load.
During phase one, watch out for these main attacks:
- A sweeping attack that covers the floor.
- A combo of two or three vines.
- A lunging attack with its mouth.
- Occasional regurgitation and projectile attacks.
Always stay close to Flora by jumping onto it to hit it, and when you see the boss winding up for an attack, the safest move is to rush to the left side of the screen and prepare to jump.
Keep hitting Flora until its health drops to about half. When that happens, the music will change, and the boss will shift into the second phase.
How to Defeat Flora in Phase Two
In the second phase, Flora will start by spewing a small puddle of blue bile in front of itself. Landing in this bile causes damage, so you need to perfect your aerial attack timing and double jumps.
The best way to avoid damage is to stay close to Flora. Use a jump to get near, then keep attacking to maintain your height and deal more damage.
Note: Staying close helps because most of Flora’s vine attacks are hard to land if you’re right next to it. Only its maw lunge can hit you from close range. Each successful attack you land refreshes your jump, allowing you to reposition using your double jump and continue attacking.
Remember to use the Hairpin if you run out of jumps. Timing it right will sling you out of danger. Keep jumping after each attack, repeating the cycle of jump, attack, and reposition until Flora is defeated.
When you win, you’ll earn rewards including a new NPC called the Personal Assistant and the Aviaries Passepartout. Now, you’re ready to explore the Aviaries with your new access.
