Starting out in Abiotic Factor, you’ll create and use a variety of makeshift tools and weapons made from office supplies. As you progress, enemies will become tougher, and upgrading your ranged weapons will become necessary. However, you won’t craft the better firearms; instead, you’ll need to find or hack into secure areas to get them.
One of the rarest guns in GATE is kept locked inside the main Security Office. This is likely one of the last remaining firearms not taken over by hostile forces or devoured by monsters. To escape successfully, you’ll want to gather as many resources as possible, including that gun, which means hacking and progress through story missions.
How to Enter the Security Office
The Security Pistol, your first firearm, is located in a shooting range inside the Security Office on Level Two. To access this area, you need a Keypad Hacker with Level One Clearance. This item is essential for advancing in the story. There are two primary ways to obtain its recipe:
- Speak with Dr. Mayfield on Level Three to unlock the recipe and learn how to craft its components.
- Discover the recipe yourself by finding or crafting the necessary parts.
The Keypad Hacker requires a Controller, an Infrared Emitter, and an LCD Screen. All of these need a Computation Brick, crafted from Security Bot CPUs and other resources. Additionally, you’ll need Boxes of Screws, which can be located on Level Three or crafted after unlocking the recipe at a Repair & Salvage Station, which you do by interacting with an Anvil.
To get the parts from Dr. Mayfield, you must go through Reception, follow the wires down toward Manufacturing West, then take the lift to Level Three. Pass through the portal to Anteverse II, then exit through another portal back to Level Three. Follow signs to Silo Three, where Dr. Mayfield is located.
If you prefer to make the components yourself or want to get them sooner, craft some Boxes of Screws. Kill and dismantle a Security Bot to obtain its CPU, which helps unlock the Computation Brick recipe. Combining these steps allows you to discover and assemble the parts needed for the Keypad Hacker.
Important Tip: Trading a Peccary Head to Warren at the first Security Booth grants you the Employee Locator Trinket. It shows a faint outline of nearby employees, making NPC locations much easier.
Once you have your Keypad Hacker, you can unlock secured doors by placing it in your hotbar, holding it, and interacting with the keypad. Upgrading it later to higher clearance levels is possible, but for now, return to the Security Office on Level Two to unlock that room.
Where to Find the Security Pistol
To find the Security Pistol, enter the Security Office and ascend either set of stairs on each side of the room. Proceed to a locked yellow door. Use the Keypad Hacker to unlock it, and inside, you’ll find the pistol and some 9mm ammo on the training range counter at the far end.
Using the Security Office as a base is a good idea if you’ve repaired the shutters with another Controller. It gives you quick access to key areas on Level Two, a shortcut elevator to Level Three, and Manufacturing West, plus plenty of space for storage and crafting stations.
The shooting range also contains a small secondary room with resources, and a broken section of the ceiling in the left corner can be used to drop into the locker room and then access the door connecting back to the Security Office.
While early-game ammo is limited, the Security Pistol’s higher damage means enemies can be taken out faster, which conserves resources over time.
How to Obtain 9mm Ammo
The 9mm ammunition for the Security Pistol and other guns is scarce but periodically respawns after a few in-game days, allowing you to farm or stockpile it. Common locations include:
- The shooting range inside the Security Office where you find the pistol.
- A small room west of Reception marked “Authorized Personnel Only,” which requires the Level One Keypad Hacker.
- Inside the Bounty Basket store in Flathill, one of the alternative worlds you can explore.
Later in the game, after reaching Manufacturing West and beyond, enemies like Grunts often carry pistols and other firearms, frequently dropping 9mm ammo when defeated.
