Side missions are an important part of Borderlands 4, and you’ll find many of them throughout the main game as well as in the Whispering Glacier DLC area. This icy wasteland hides terrible creatures beneath and above the surface, so there will be plenty of people needing help.
Sometimes, the help isn’t related to the terrifying voices and nightmares driving people crazy. For example, you might come across a young woman searching for her missing grandfather. However, you won’t find this mission listed anywhere. To reveal it, you’ll need to grab some dynamite and blow up the icy waters of the Whispering Glacier.
### How to Unlock the Ice Fishing Side Mission
Ice Fishing is a hidden side quest that is part of the Ellie and the Vault of the Damned DLC, and it requires a little puzzle-solving before it becomes available. You also need to complete the first campaign mission from this DLC called On Icebound Shores Abandoned.
First, look for fishing spots in the Crooked Teeth area. These spots are always near shallow water and usually have a chair and a bucket of dynamite with them. They can be found in a few places:
– Three spots on the glacier near the Edge of the World fast travel point.
– One spot along the edge of the glacier south of the Edge of the World, across from a small frozen lake.
When you find one of these fishing spots, look out for splashing water with shiny particles in the ocean nearby. Grab the dynamite from the bucket and toss it into the splashing water. This will cause a small explosion, unearthing loot and revealing a special Echo Log.
If your dynamite throw misses, don’t worry — it will respawn in the bucket after a few seconds, so you can try again without losing access to the mission. Use your Grapple to grab the Echo Log either midair or from the water’s edge if it falls into the ocean. When you pick it up, it will automatically play a message from someone named Grumpy.
Repeat this process at three other sparkling water spots nearby. It might take some tries to find the right splashes, especially if they aren’t fully sparkly. Once you’ve collected all four Echo Logs, go to the Speakeasy and find the new side quest.
### Where to Find Ol’ Thrash
To find Ol’ Thrash, head to the Speakeasy. Inside, go to one of the tables behind the bar where you can talk to Marina. Then, return to the Whispering Glacier via Ellie’s Garage fast travel point. Drive through the canyon to the west, then continue to the ocean at the edge of the map.
Inside a round hut behind a chunk of ice, find and pick up the Echo Log sitting on some dead fish and blood. Listen to it, then grab the dynamite from a nearby bucket. Throw the dynamite on the cracked ice behind the hut, which is surrounded by Threshers, before it explodes.
Ol’ Thrash will emerge from the hole after the explosion. This boss Thresher has two health bars and is similar to other bosses like Ice Maw. Watch out for his melee slams, seismic waves, and the smaller Threshers that spawn during the fight. With caution, you’ll be able to defeat him.
After killing Ol’ Thrash, you’ll earn loot and a special item called Gumpy’s Hat. Pick up the hat, and Marina will call you, signaling the end of the quest. Completing this quest also counts towards the “Looking For Work At The Top Of The World” achievement or trophy, which requires finishing all side missions in the Whispering Glacier area. It’s a necessary step if you want to fully complete the DLC.
