Every character you can play in Elden Ring: Nightreign has their own unique skills, moves, relics, and a dedicated side quest called the Remembrance Quest. This questline is divided into different chapters, which are written down in your Journal. To progress, you need to interact with various NPCs and complete specific personal objectives.

With the expansion, The Forsaken Hollows, two new characters are introduced, each with their own quests. In this guide, we focus on the Scholar’s Remembrance Quest, explaining each chapter and what actions you need to take in each one.

How to Complete Scholar’s Side Quest

You can start the Scholar’s Remembrance Quest as soon as you unlock the character. To do this, you must defeat Gladius, the first Nightlord available. Our guide offers tips for this fight.

Chapter 1 and Chapter 2

The initial chapters involve completing expeditions with the Scholar. It doesn’t matter if you succeed or die early; what matters is that you play until you receive Memory Fragments at the Roundtable Hold.

Note: The Memory Fragment notification appears in the lower right corner once you return to the hub. If you miss it, you can check your Journal and switch between pages to see the latest active chapter.

Chapter 3

Start the remembrance from your Journal. Visit the chapel at the Roundtable Hold, where you’ll find The Undertaker.

On entering, turn right and examine the desk with papers. Reading the “Tear” piece of paper will give you a personal objective. Next, begin the Balancers or Dreglord expeditions alone or with friends.

You don’t need to win the fights—just go to the marked spot on your map, indicated by an orange flag. The location will change with each expedition, so always check your map.

Tip: It’s best to clear a camp, level up, and go on your first day. If you have allies, it’s better, but you can also avoid enemies and rush to the objective.

In my case, I needed to go to a dungeon on the eastern side of the map. Inside, find a room with a ladder and a hole in the floor. Going down reveals a desk with books and an item called Vassal’s Journal.

Complete the expedition (you can die during the first boss fight if playing solo and want to speed through), then return to the chapel. You’ll find Undertaker licking a purple substance on the wall. Interact with her, try to leave, then interact with the NPC at the door. Afterward, talk to Undertaker again, and she will thank you. Ask her for a favor to finish this chapter.

Chapter 4

Simply continue playing with the Scholar until you earn another Memory Fragment.

Chapter 5

Open your Journal, select the fifth chapter, and start the Remembrance. Talk to the Small Jar, who will teleport you to the northern keep—a castle in the DLC map. Reach the top floor to find a room with a large icy rock. Climb the rock and the platform above, then find a hole in the wall.

Tip: You’re level 8, so enemies are manageable, but you can skip creatures and avoid fights until necessary.

Proceed through the hole, interact with a door, then go back. You’ll face a few enemies—prepare accordingly. Here’s a guide on the Scholar build and relics to help. Once finished, return to the locked door, now openable, and interact with the desk and the character trapped in crystal in the same room. Finish the Remembrance to earn the Cleansing Tear relic.

Chapter 6 and Chapter 7

Again, participate in expeditions with the Scholar until Memory Fragments unlock the final chapter.

Chapter 8

Access your Journal, start the last Remembrance, and speak with Undertaker in the chapel. Interact with the mirror in the garb room and examine your desk.

Your final personal objective will be revealed: defeat Traitorous Straighess in the Dreglord expedition.

Complete the quest by defeating the Traitorous Straighess and collecting your final relic.

Rewards for Completing the Scholar’s Side Quest

After finishing the last chapter, you receive the “My Dear Successor” note relic, which boosts your skills used in allies’ actions, along with the Scholar’s Remembrance skin and the Night of the Dregs relic. If you haven’t defeated the Dreglord before, this relic is great for attacks and spells involving rot.
