Dantooine is the first planet you explore in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic as a Jedi Padawan and Force user. The game also provides insight into the role the Jedi played in society at this point in the Star Wars timeline. One important role for them is to act as crime solvers, which is the focus of the “Murdered Settler” side quest in KOTOR.
A settler named Calder Nettic has been murdered, and Jedi Bolook asks you to find out who among two suspects might have done it. There are several ways this case can unfold, but only one leads to the best outcome.
Updated on February 7, 2026, by Andrew Scariati: This quest is considered one of the best side quests in KOTOR. It has three possible endings. We’ll guide you on how to earn the most experience points (EXP), along with some tips on potential pitfalls and glitches.
Note: This quest disappears after the events on the Leviathan, which happen after you get your third Star Map. Make sure to finish it beforehand!
How to Start the Murdered Settler Quest
The quest begins in the Grove area of Dantooine, specifically at the bridge by the river running through the middle of the Grove map. There, you’ll find Bolook, a Twi’lek Jedi.
Speak with Bolook, and he’ll tell you he’s investigating the murder of Calder Nettic. Calder was out hunting on the cloudy morning when he was apparently killed by one of two men: Rickard Lusoff or Handon Guld.
Bolook mentions that both suspects have noticeable injuries:
- Rickard has an ankle injury
- Handon is clutching his side
Blood was found on Calder’s rifle, which is currently being analyzed. Bolook brings a droid with him to assist with additional information. You won’t be able to rely on your party members for help here — it’s all about your detective skills.
If you’re having trouble progressing, it might be due to mods installed, as this quest often glitches when combined with certain modifications.
Questioning Part 1: How to Gather Facts
To crack the case, you need to interrogate the suspects and verify their stories using the droid. Then, you’ll tell Bolook which suspect is lying.
There are four rounds of questioning for this quest. First, it’s best to research the body and rifle early on to avoid forgetting later.
Round One & Two:
- Question the suspects about how they found the body.
- Handon will say he was out for a run and discovered Calder with Rickard nearby.
- Rickard claims he was hunting and accidentally shot a creature called an Iriaz. He says he chased the Iriaz and found Handon over Calder’s body.
- After the suspects, check with the droid for extra info before returning to Bolook.
- Bolook will ask whom you suspect, and the correct answer is Rickard.
- Mention that the weather was cloudy and there was no glare, which means Rickard’s shot shouldn’t have been affected. This makes him suspicious.
Next, ask about each suspect’s relationship with Calder:
- Rickard was Calder’s business partner.
- Handon rented a speeder from Calder.
- When you report your findings, tell Bolook Rickard is lying about his relationship because he denied being Calder’s partner.
Round Three & Four:
- Investigate the murder weapon.
- Handon will unexpectedly mention his wife was cheating on him with Calder.
- He claims his blaster was stolen recently. Ask the droid to check if there’s a report of a stolen weapon — there isn’t.
- Tell Bolook Handon is lying about the theft, based on his injured side.
- Then, examine the blood evidence. The analysis shows the blood on Calder’s rifle does not belong to him.
- Bolook confirms the blood belonged to the victim. You then inform him that the blood actually belongs to Handon, as he is bleeding from a blaster wound, confirming the blood match.
Final Revelation and Outcome
Both suspects are guilty: Handon killed Calder first, and Rickard shot Handon by mistake, thinking he was Calder. Both men are imprisoned, and Bolook thanks you for your help.
Experience Rewards:
Your EXP depends on how thorough and accurate your investigation is. Following this guide will earn you the maximum reward:
- If you accuse one suspect, you get 470 EXP.
- If you accuse both without evidence, one is convicted, earning 570 EXP.
- Correctly accuse both with evidence, solving the case fully, grants 1,310 EXP and is the best ending.
This quest provides a great chance to earn experience and fully engage your detective skills in the game.
