You will face several bosses in Titan Quest 2, but the first major challenge to learn from is Appollonia the Terrible, the scourge of Proti Island. Early in the game, you team up with Aristonoe to seek out and defeat her. Your adventure begins with a mission to protect Proti Village from Gryphon worshipers. You’ll climb a mountain filled with tougher enemies, face two combat challenges, and ultimately confront the legendary bird at the summit. Here’s what you need to know to prepare for the Gryphon boss fight.

Where to Find the Gryphon

You find the Gryphon after leaving the starting area. Aristonoe will be near a new portal, talking about a large claw mark on a cow carcass, suggesting only a Gryphon could have done this. Look for characters with speech bubbles; they might offer side quests or helpful tips. Together, you set out to locate the Gryphon’s nest, crossing a beach filled with crabs — this area serves as a combat tutorial to get you familiar with the game’s fighting mechanics. You’ve already defeated some boars, but now you’ll face your first real fight.

Explore thoroughly for chests, and break pots or boxes to find weapons. Since different combat styles exist, this is a good opportunity to experiment with new weapons before investing heavily in any attribute, as this will improve your effectiveness with certain weapons throughout the game.

The Hunt Begins

Your quest kicks off when you meet Aristonoe after leaving the initial area. She notices a claw mark and discusses how only a Gryphon could have created such destruction. Characters will have speech bubbles indicating side quests or hints. You and Aristonoe will go on a journey to find the Gryphon’s nest, which begins with an area full of crabs — this serves as a small combat training zone to help you understand game mechanics better. Be mindful of the enemies as they tend to have a wide range of detection, so stay alert and watch out for emerging threats from the sand. Also, keep an eye on Aristonoe’s health and step in if she’s in danger.

The Mysterious Cave

Next, you’ll head to a shrine on the northern part of the path. The route is mostly straightforward, but some side paths reward you with loot and optional enemies. This leads to the Mysterious Cave, filled with skeleton enemies. Aristonoe will open the entrance, and you’ll need to defend her from monsters to gain entry. Once inside, you’ll interact with the red shrine to start a combat challenge that tests your skills. Defeating these enemies grants you a blessing. This event is key to unlocking your first Mastery tree, allowing you to focus on a specialization, either melee or magic.

Choose your Mastery and assign skill points accordingly. Then, continue on the quest with Aristonoe, heading northeast toward Proti Village in the game world.

Defend Proti Village

When you arrive, you’ll see invaders ransacking the town, so you must fight them off and rescue trapped civilians. These enemies come from various directions, marked by speech bubbles near rubble where civilians are hiding. As you approach four locations, the enemy waves will spawn. Clear the area of foes, and the villagers will emerge, safe but shaken. Once all four are rescued, Aristonoe will gather everyone in the town center and deliver a speech, signaling the suburb’s recovery. You can stop by the trader to upgrade your gear, then leave through the northern gate heading toward the Gryphon’s nest.

The Queen of the Mountain

Before approaching the nest, you should grind to reach level eight, unlocking a secondary Mastery at the shrine in the cave. When ready, head toward the Gryphon Cult Camp further up the mountain, making sure to practice jumping and climbing, which are essential for the upcoming fight. Clear out the cultists camped there, then climb to the top of the mountain where the Gryphon awaits in its nest.

Gryphon Boss Battle Guide

The Gryphon, known as Appollonia the Terrible, is typically your first boss encounter. Her large health bar appears when the fight begins. As she mostly stays airborne, look for green circles indicating her attack targets and dodge accordingly. Use your strongest skills when she’s on the ground to deal maximum damage. Bow users can shoot her midair, while melee fighters need to get close temporarily. She’ll also slam into the ground, releasing three waves of air attacks, which you must dodge to avoid damage and staggering. She alternates between flying and slamming, so repeat these tactics until she’s defeated.

Loot and Moving Forward

After the fight, she’ll drop plenty of blue and gold loot—make sure to reorganize your inventory to carry as much as possible. When you’re done looting, approach the eggs in the nest on the mountaintop to trigger a scene with Nemesis. You’ll then need to run through a system of caves, pursued by supernatural enemies trying to prevent your escape from Proti Island.

Your ultimate goal is to meet Aristonoe at a boat marked on your map. You can choose whether to stop and fight enemies for extra experience, but you can also run straight through the caves with fewer monsters following you. The quest concludes when you arrive at the boat with Aristonoe. Watch the scene and prepare for your next main story step in Titan Quest 2.
