Thanks to The Walking Dead, the crossbow has become the weapon most associated with zombie apocalypse stories. It’s no surprise that it appears in Dying Light: The Beast as well. However, the crossbow, which the game calls the Hunting Crossbow, is actually one of the hardest weapons to unlock because it’s also one of the most powerful. Here’s how you can get it.
### How to Unlock the Hunting Crossbow
The Hunting Crossbow is a late-game weapon tied to a side mission called “Hunting Yaga”. This mission becomes available after reaching Level 11 and unlocking the Safe Zone in the Abandoned House within the National Park. After that, a character named Max will show up in your hideout and give you the task of hunting a Yaga, with the reward being the crossbow, which he calls “Lizzy”.
Since the mission requires you to be at least level 11, it’s best tackled when you’re near the end of the game and have all your skills leveled up. The quest involves following clear objectives, but you need to venture into the forest at night to fight a miniboss called Yaga and then face some human enemies. Be prepared for a tough fight.
> Tip: The hardest part of this quest is dealing with Volatiles that may attack you during the fight. The mission is only available at night, and it’s recommended not to use guns, as they tend to attract these zombies.
Once you complete the mission and avenge Max, you will receive the crossbow at the end of the quest. From there, you can use it whenever you want, and it’s highly effective.
### Using the Crossbow and Crafting Bolts
The Hunting Crossbow is similar to a bow and arrow in that it’s a ranged weapon without durability limits. But it’s far more powerful—basic bolts can take out most enemies in one or two shots, depending on where you hit them. This makes it one of the most overpowered weapons in the game.
You can also pick up and reuse bolts that you fire, though whether they get stuck in enemies or disappear seems to happen randomly. Crafting bolts is straightforward; four bolts cost 12 Scrap and 2 Feathers, making it easy to keep a supply. Different types of bolts, such as Fire and Shock bolts, can also be unlocked from Safe Zones. These do exactly what their names suggest. Unfortunately, the Hunting Crossbow cannot be upgraded, but it works perfectly as it is.
Overall, the Hunting Crossbow is one of the most powerful and desirable weapons in the game. Although hunting down the Yaga is a challenging task, the reward is well worth the effort.
