In Borderlands 4, one of the first allies you encounter, besides the Outbounders, is Zadra. She used to work as a scientist for the Order and was responsible for creating many of their most advanced inventions. In a nearby region, Carcadia Burns, another scientist named Leopold detects unusual seismic activity.
Leopold asks for your help to investigate whether the Rippers are planning something dangerous or if a natural disaster might happen soon. It could also be connected to something Zadra left behind years ago, considering the many Order facilities scattered both above and below ground on the planet Kairos. It’s your job to uncover what’s really happening.
How to Get Into the Underground Facility
There’s a side mission called Fault Hunting in Carcadia Burns. You can start it by talking to Leopold in his small house at the Society for Amateur Seismology Enthusiasts Point of Interest, located west of Judgement’s Lapse Silo. After talking to him, head east to the plateau beneath the silo and then into the nearby mountain cave known as The Rumbling Cleft.
Jump and glide over to the air vent on the nearby rock formation, then use it to reach the other side of the tunnel. Walk further into the cave until you find a chamber where you’ll be ambushed by Creeps.
Note: You can find one of Carcadia Burn’s 39 Dead Bolts on the ground just beneath the ledge with the biggest Creep nest attached.
After taking down the Creeps, explore the chamber and check out two important areas: the transponder near a buried body next to a fallen Ripper Drill, and a large door that’s closed.
Entering the Facility
Use the air vent in the room to boost yourself, then glide over to the ledge filled with large, moving pustules that emit light. Crawl into the opening and slide down into the facility below.
Progress further into the base until you reach a small room with Creeps; eliminate them. Then approach the broken door and look through the destructible tube inside on the right. Shooting it will open the door. Beyond, there’s another room with an open trapdoor.
Defeat the two Creeps down there, jump to the next floor, and enter the large room ahead. Examine the console attached to a circular machine after receiving a call from Leopold, and check the dead Creeps on the floor beneath it.
Solving the Pipe Puzzle
Once inside, interact with three large blue tubes in the corner. You’ll need to complete a puzzle using the pipes along the ceiling. Use your grapple to reconfigure the pipes so they connect the power to the central machine:
- Rotate the pipes closest to the machine into an L-shape, linking it to the console.
- Connect the middle pipes on all sides.
- Link the pipes near the tubes to complete the connections.
After fixing the pipes, return to the console and start hacking it with Echo-4. The Creeps won’t like that, so be prepared to fight them off as they approach the console. Watch the hologram that appears once powered up—it will give you key information. After the conversation, head through the door near the power tubes to quickly return to the cave’s entrance.
How to Reach Genome
Fast travel south to the Makeshift Chalet, then further south to The Yawning Yard Point of Interest, which is near Genome’s location. Fight or outrun the Rippers at the junkyard in front. Climb over the skeleton to the side path around the cliff’s edge, then jump off the crane platform down to the lower level.
Keep climbing down until you find a cave at the bottom of the cliff. Approach the door to get a call from Genome, granting access. Inside, move through another large room after clearing two groups of Creeps. Unlike regular enemies, you’ll face the Seneschal Order, a tougher enemy type that has Armor Bars instead of Health Bars, similar to Vault Guardians like Inceptus.
Defeating Genome
Genome is a powerful Synth that primarily fires clusters of Cryo damage while moving quickly across the room, similar to Engine or Armature enemies, but it’s not overly dangerous on its own. Alongside Genome, waves of Seneschal Order enemies will keep respawning from doorways, so use cover wisely.
Periodically clear out the enemies surrounding Genome while dealing damage. When Genome’s Armor Bar drops to about 50%, it will start regenerating its armor up to 80%, then stop. Finish off Genome and the remaining enemies, then retrieve the Security Override Key from behind Genome’s tube.
Bring the key to the nearby control room. Interact with the console there to power down the facility, ending the mission. Rewards include experience points, cash, some Eridium, and a random uncommon, rare, or epic Assault Rifle, along with the Eternal Defender style for your weapons.
