To acquire Magearna and its Magearnite Mega Stone in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, you must complete a specific side mission called “Side Mission 195: Restarting Magearna.” This mission begins by talking to Jett in the lobby of the Quasartico Inc. building.
Before you can unlock this mission, you need to finish another side quest, “Side Mission 190: A Mimikyu for My Cutie,” which is also started inside Quasartico Inc. by speaking with Vinnie. Quarsartico Inc. is located in the northwest corner of Lumiose City.
In the Mimikyu side quest, Vinnie asks you to catch a Mimikyu to give to his daughter. To find Mimikyu, look in a three-star Hyperspace Wild Zone that features Ghost- and Fairy-type Pokémon, as Mimikyu appears in those areas. You can only find it in these specific zones because of its dual Ghost and Fairy typing. To find such zones, start “Hyperspace Mission 08: Hyperspace Lumiose Survey No.4.” After that, you can re-roll spawn locations by resting at a bench in Lumiose City, which resets the spawns for the day/night cycle—similar to trying to catch a Mudkip for evolution.
Once a Hyperspace Wild Zone with a Mimikyu spawns, it’s easy to spot because its silhouette appears slightly zoomed out; you’ll see a pointed outfit at the bottom and a thin Pikachu-shaped head bobbing to the right. Catching Mimikyu is straightforward because its catch rate is fairly high, especially with moves that exploit its weaknesses—Ghost- and Steel-type moves like Shadow Ball or Steel Punch are effective in depleting its health quickly and increasing your chances to catch it.
After catching a Mimikyu, return to Vinnie and give him your chosen Mimikyu to complete the quest. The reward includes 10,000 Poké Dollars, five Heavy Balls, and five Lure Balls.
Following this, re-enter Quasartico Inc., and Jett will return as the quest giver for Side Mission 195. To restart Magearna, speak with Jett and gather 999 Mega Shards, which are used to reboot the Pokémon. Once you have all the shards, give them to Jett, and Magearna will awaken from its 500-year slumber, along with its Magearnite Mega Stone to enable Mega Evolution. Returning to Jett with the shards causes Magearna to awaken immediately, and you’ll receive the Mega Stone as part of the rewards.
To farm Mega Shards more efficiently, you can break crystals in Hyperspace areas instead of wandering around Lumiose City. Hyperspace Zones contain clusters of Mega Shards that are more abundant and grouped closer together, which significantly reduces the farming time. To do this, you’ll need to feed Hoopla Donuts to access these zones, then smash crystals—using one-star donuts to access higher-level zones without battles can quicken the process. Upgrading the Canari Plush with collected Colorful Screws also boosts Mega Shard drops. With these upgrades, farming 999 shards can take around 30 minutes.
Finally, bring the 999 Mega Shards to Jett. Once handed over, Magearna will awaken and join your team. Its Mega Stone will also be handed to you, allowing you to Mega Evolve Magearna in battles. Completing the “Restarting Magearna” mission grants you 20,000 Poké Dollars and five Exp. Candy XL as additional rewards.
