Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles finally brings one of the most popular and highly praised Strategy RPGs to modern gaming systems. It offers everyone a chance to experience Ramza’s epic journey in the best possible version. New players will find it enjoyable, while seasoned fans will appreciate the improvements like quality-of-life updates.
During the Fort Besselat series, you’ll witness Ramza and his allies try to open a sluice gate to flood the battlefield. This mission is full of surprises, twists, and revelations, all enhanced by great voice acting and visual upgrades.
Fort Besselat presents a unique choice: you can pick which side to attack—either the North Wall or the South Wall. We recommend the North Wall since it’s easier to handle with our team setup, so we’ll focus on that here. The North Wall has a group of enemies including Dragoons, Archers, a Summoner, and a Black Mage. They’re a strong team but nothing too scary since no special enemies appear in this fight. Facing these foes, you’ll find they have no unique traits, which makes the battle more manageable.
The enemy lineup includes two Archers, two Dragoons, one Black Mage, and one Summoner. The South Wall, by comparison, hosts three Knights, two Archers, a Ninja, and a Thief. We recommend sticking with the North Wall because the rewards are the same, and the enemy types are less problematic, plus you can find items on the ground using the Treasure Hunter ability.
To beat the North Wall, you should carefully choose your team formation. Your goal is to counter the enemy’s Archers and Dragoons, as they pose the biggest threat. Ramza should be a Dragoon, utilizing Jump to pick off enemies from a distance. Agrias is a reliable ally, and adding a Ninja, Summoner, and Dancer makes your team capable of delivering swift, high damage. This setup allows you to eliminate enemies quickly, though navigating the map can sometimes be tricky.
A recommended squad might start with Ramza as Dragoon in his default spot, with the Summoner positioned to his right and Agrias nearby. The Ninja should be placed beside Ramza, and the Dancer a few tiles behind him to stay safer. Positioning is critical due to the layout, so adjust your units for optimal protection, especially the Dancer, who needs to avoid being targeted by enemy Archers.
In the opening moves, your Ninja should move to the right and throw a Shuriken at the Monk. Ramza then jumps onto the enemy Summoner for big damage. Agrias can attack the Monk as well or support by casting Hallowed Bolt on the enemy. Meanwhile, the Dancer uses her Mince Minuet to deal periodic damage, and the Summoner gets ready to summon Golem, providing additional defense.
On the following turn, a Dragoon will move forward and wait, while an Archer aims at Ramza. The Summoner casts Shiva, targeting Ramza and Agrias for significant damage. Ramza’s turn involves jumping onto an Archer after a successful attack, and Agrias can position herself to cast Hallowed Bolt on the Summoner to take them out quickly. The Ninja can also reposition to attack or prepare for the next round.
As the fight progresses into subsequent rotations, you’ll face enemies like Knights, Archers, and a Black Mage. Each turn involves strategic moves, such as casting spells, jumping, and positioning to maximize damage and defense. Protect your units from enemy attacks, especially the archers at high ground, by placing them carefully.
Your team should focus on relentlessly jumping onto enemies with Ramza, as his high Speed and abilities like Tailwind allow quick successive jumps, rapidly reducing enemy numbers. The Black Mage should be prioritized too, as they can cast devastating spells. Once the enemies are weakened or eliminated, target the final Archer to open the floodgates.
Completing the North Wall battle rewards you with the Carabineer Mail armor and 20,900 Gil. The experience and JP also give you a good boost to your characters’ growth. The overall strategy emphasizes the importance of unit placement, effective spell use, and leveraging Ramza’s Jump ability to dominate the fight.
The Sluice phase introduces a new challenge, with enemies including Knights, Archers, and Black Mages. This part of the battle involves opening the floodgates by battling through enemies who can pick off your fragile units from afar. Enemy archers are stationed at high vantage points and require careful positioning to avoid being targeted.
For the Sluice, the team composition can remain similar, but swapping out the Dancer for a White Mage or Mystic hybrid is recommended to help keep your party alive. Ramza’s role as Dragoon remains crucial—his ability to repeatedly Jump on enemies makes him extremely effective. Support units like a Ninja, Summoner, and Agrias will continue to provide firepower and healing as needed.
Start the fight with your Ninja moving to the left to attack a Knight, ideally hitting them with a probability of around 54%. Ramza should be prepared to jump onto enemy Knights or spell-casters, and the Summoner can cast Golem or similar spells for protection. Protect your fragile units such as the White Mage or Summoner by positioning them safely and using spells like Cure if needed.
As enemies stay put on pressure plates, your focus is on systematically removing them with Ramza’s Jump and spell attacks. Use high-priority spells like Odin to deal massive damage to archers and maximize Ramza’s jumping potential. Keep your units alive by healing whenever necessary, and carefully manage your positions to prevent enemy archers from taking out key characters early.
The second rotation involves waiting for enemies to guard mechanisms and executing spells like Golem or Cure to sustain your team. Ramza’s Jump remains a key tactic, and with coordinated attacks, you can swiftly take down the enemy mage group and secure the floodgate opening.
The third rotation presents more complex scenarios, including managing units in danger and dealing with enemy reinforcements. Moving Agrias to assist or revive fallen allies early can make a difference. Your Ninja and Ramza should continue to jump on enemies, focusing on eliminating high-threat targets like the Black Mage or remaining archers. Spells like Odin or Hallowed Bolt will help clear the field efficiently.
Once the floodgates are opened and enemies are defeated, keep attacking until all foes are eliminated. This will trigger the flood of water, completing the mission. Rewards include 28,900 Gil and valuable equipment like the Carabineer Mail, alongside large amounts of experience and JP for character growth.
Throughout this mission, positioning, prioritization, and Ramza’s Jump ability are essential tools. By carefully planning your moves and maintaining control of the map, you can overcome the enemy forces and accomplish the objective with impressive efficiency.
