Characters and How to Unlock Them in Neon Abyss 2
Many roguelike games focus on the character or class you choose to play, and Neon Abyss 2 offers six different characters to try out. Each character, called an Agent, starts with a unique weapon and a keepsake that gives them passive bonuses.
Most characters need to be unlocked through specific tasks, except for Nik, who is available from the start. Unlocking characters usually depends on their preferred playstyle, and although all can do well regardless of their affinity, you’ll need to complete certain challenges to access most of them. To unlock most Agents, you’ve got to first venture into the abyss.
How to Unlock Every Agent
The game is currently in Early Access on Steam, so details may change as updates come out.
How to Unlock Each Agent
There are six Agents to choose from: Nik, Elise, Saya, James, Xuan, and Lúcia. You can switch between them on the Agent screen near the dance floor. Except for Nik, who is available from the beginning, each Agent needs to be unlocked by completing a specific task.
You can check your progress on the task screen next to the Agent menu or through the menu at the bar, then under the Agent tab. All Agents start with different amounts of health and resources, but everyone begins with three Crystals regardless of the agent.
Note that progress for Agent-based tasks carries over between runs. You don’t have to complete all the tasks in one attempt to unlock an Agent.
The Agents’ Starting Equipment and Bonuses
Each Agent comes with a basic weapon unique to them and a special Agent item that grants bonuses, like the ability to use an extra weapon or passive effects on certain resources.
About Agent Affinities
While Agents can have an affinity for categories like Wisp or Hatchmon, any character can work with any category. Items and bonuses that benefit their affinity or give similar effects don’t put the character at a disadvantage if you choose different builds.
For instance, the Full Of Energy Fate Card starts all runs with two Shields, which can help agents with lower health survive early stages. Affinity primarily makes it easier to start certain builds, but you can succeed with any approach later on.
Specific Agents
Nik
- Starting Hearts: 3
- Starting Resources: One Bomb and One Key
- Best Faith: Consumerism or Fortunism
Nik is the first Agent unlocked by starting a game. His weapon, Windcaller, fires an extra laser every four attacks—its power grows with more coins. His Agent item, the Legacy Watch, makes him drop coins when he takes damage. This makes him a good choice if you like collecting coins and boosting damage or survivability with Coin items.
He’s easy to use because of his health and resources, and his guaranteed coin drops from each room help him stay strong even if his weapons aren’t the best. Running Coin-related Faiths and items like Loan from the Temple of Consumerism can boost his power even further.
Elise
- Starting Hearts: 4
- Starting Resources: One Key
- Best Faith: Agapeism
Unlocked by hatching eight Hatchmon, Elise starts with the weapon Warming, a short-range gun that releases homing bullets with unique effects every five shots. Her Agent item, Plush Gloves, allows her Hatchmon Kiddy to follow her and revive unconscious Hatchmon nearby.
The more Hatchmon she has, the more powerful her homing bullets become, making her effective against fast-moving enemies. Using the Adorable Companion Faith Card helps her start with two Hatchmon, giving her early damage and survivability benefits.
Xuan
- Starting Hearts: 2
- Starting Resources: One Bomb and One Key
- Best Faith: Umbrism
Xuan unlocks after collecting at least ten Purple Wisps during a run. His weapon, Fanchen, a Wisp-type sword, releases runestones that chase enemies and deal damage when fully charged. His Agent item, the Clarity Gourd, provides brief invulnerability and can absorb enemy bullets to charge and activate Wisps.
This makes Xuan excellent at generating Wisps and avoiding damage if managed well. Grazing enemy projectiles is enough to activate his invulnerability, and his playstyle benefits from careful positioning and movement.
Saya
- Starting Hearts: 2
- Starting Resources: One Key
- Best Faith: Artisanism
Unlocked by reaching Floor Five, Saya’s weapon, Sakurafall, is a jumping sword that lets her dash toward enemies with invulnerability during the attack. Additional jumps increase her dashing ability. Her Agent item, Rabbit & Bear, allows her to hold two weapons, including Sakurafall and another of her choice.
Sakurafall acts as a movement skill as well as an attack, useful for dodging bullets or reaching higher platforms. Pairing her with Faiths that boost jumps makes her highly mobile and effective against enemies.
Lúcia
- Starting Hearts: 3
- Starting Resources: None
- Best Faith: Thesaurism or Consumerism
Unlocking Lúcia requires collecting and using at least 30 Curios, making her the hardest Agent to unlock. Most Curios cost several Crystals, which can be scarce depending on your luck. Once unlocked, her Agent item allows her to hold and swap between two Curios, and with items that boost Crystal drops, she can be very powerful. Her ability to combine different Curios lets her deal room-wide damage or gain various bonuses based on your chosen effects.
