Making trade evolutions in Pokémon Legends: Z-A is simpler than it used to be in the past. However, some Pokémon need more than just a trading partner. After you have a buddy, you’ll need to progress through the story to unlock the Metal Coat item, which is essential for evolving certain Pokémon like Scizor.
First, you need to catch a Scyther, the Pokémon’s pre-evolution form. You can find Scyther in Wild Zone 13, located in the northwest part of Lumiose City on North Boulevard. These Scyther usually appear around level 38, so bring plenty of Great Balls or Ultra Balls to increase your chances. If you’re lucky enough to catch a shiny or a good one, the next step involves obtaining the Metal Coat. This item is used up when traded with a Pokémon like Scyther or Onix.
Before you can get the Metal Coat, you must complete main mission 35: Reaching Rank A. Upon finishing this mission, you’ll unlock the opportunity to earn a Metal Coat as a reward from Side Mission 101: Steadfast as Steel.
Another way to get a Metal Coat after finishing the main story is through Side Mission 114: A Feather From Skarmory. This side mission becomes available once you’ve completed the main storyline. To start it, head to Bleu Street in the southwest part of the map, just southwest of Wild Zone 16. Find a Rust Syndicate Grunt standing near a large archway and talk to him to trigger the mission. Defeat the Pokémon he uses—Excadrill, Steelix, Mawile, and Scizor—to complete the quest and earn the Metal Coat.
If you prefer to buy a Metal Coat after completing the game, visit Racine Construction in the southeast part of the map, near Wild Zone 17. Enter the building, go into the garage, and look for two workers by the stairs on the left. Talk to the worker on the left and purchase the Metal Coat for 4,980 Pokedollars.
Once you have a Metal Coat, you’re ready to evolve Scyther into Scizor. To do this, make sure Scyther is holding the Metal Coat. Then, connect with a friend via a trade. Set an eight-digit room code, trade Scyther holding the Metal Coat, and once the trade is complete, you’ll have a Scizor.
