Ninja Gaiden games are known for their fast-paced action and tough challenge, but they also feature many collectibles for players to find. This is true for Ninja Gaiden 4 as well.
Instead of Crystal Skulls or Golden Scarabs, Ninja Gaiden 4’s main collectible is creatures called Gourdies. These are hidden throughout most levels of the game. Here’s where to find all of them and what each one does.
Gourdies Explained
Gourdies are gourd-shaped creatures that Yakumo needs to find across the 19 chapters of Ninja Gaiden 4. There are 15 Gourdies in total, and they are usually hidden well. Some chapters even have multiple Gourdies to discover.
There are two types of Gourdies. The first type requires you to complete a quick-time event to catch them. The other type, which are blue in color, will disappear if they see Yakumo approaching, so you need to be sneaky.
Note: Gourdies cannot be found while playing as Ryu—they are only available when replaying as Yakumo.
Why Collect Gourdies?
Besides earning a trophy called Critter Collector for gathering them all, Gourdies serve no direct purpose on their own. However, some missions involve finding five Gourdies at once, which reward you with NinjaCoins as an incentive.
Chapter-by-Chapter Gourdie Locations
Chapter 1
In Bloodsoaked Tokyo, progress through the level until Umi gives you the Caddis Wire. Use it to reach a platform, then turn left instead of right; at the end of the path, you’ll find a Gourdy waiting for a quick-time event.
Chapter 2
In Haunted District, after surviving some rail-grinding sequences and platforming, head to the left of a room with a red shipping container, climb it, and turn left again to find the Gourdy.
Chapter 3
In Phantom Pleasure Quarter, after passing a wall-run, instead of climbing up, jump down to the lower layer. Reach a messy room with enemies; the Gourdy will be in the right corner.
Chapter 4
In Pilgrim’s Windswept Path, ride the wind tunnel using the wing suit, slide under a gap, and reach the higher area above. Turn right and look down to spot the Gourdy hiding in the shadows.
Chapter 5
In Raging Valley, during the cave section, look for a wall with yellow leaves—run up it, then slide under a gap to find the Gourdy. In the big village area, defeat enemies, then platform to the roof of the main building where the Gourdy is perched.
Chapter 6
In Guiding Winds, after climbing yellow walls, immediately turn around and look for a hidden cliff platform where the Gourdy is seated.
Chapter 7
In Purgatory Path, the Gourdy is behind the gate you reach after climbing the path filled with enemies and a boss fight. Head past the gate to find it.
Chapter 8
In Drowned District, turn right at the start of the level. Wait for the Gourdy to approach you before collecting it.
Chapter 9
In Realm of Silent Dead, after a wave of enemies, cross a ramp using the surfboard. After reaching a crystal area, walk to the right, sneak behind crates, and pick up the Gourdy.
Chapter 11
During infiltration in the level leading to the DDO base, after the initial rail sequence, follow the stairs to a platform. Instead of jumping onto the rail, go left around crates to find the Gourdy.
Chapter 12
In Dragon’s Maw, after reaching an area with stairs and a set of enemies, keep left and follow the path to a hidden platform with the Gourdy hiding nearby.
Chapter 19
In Ebon Wings, the final chapter, head to the first Umi and Tyran checkpoint. Instead of going forward, climb up platforms until you see the room with the Gourdy sitting in front of some crates.
Additional Tips
- Some Gourdies require stealth and patience—sneak up on blue ones to grab them.
- Many levels have designated paths or hidden spots. Look for suspicious areas like behind crates, on rooftops, or beneath platforms.
- Be aware that in some chapters, missing the Gourdy means it’s gone forever, as doors may close and not reopen.
Collecting all Gourdies is a challenging but rewarding part of Ninja Gaiden 4, and every chapter offers a new hiding spot to discover.
