As you explore Arcadia-7 in StarRupture, you’ll encounter many mysterious locations and objects, many of which can be mined or investigated for resources. There are meteorites to break open, bugs to fight, and strange vine-covered areas that seem to hide secrets.
What are these creepy pits, and what treasures are they hiding? Here’s everything you need to know about finding and exploring underground caves in StarRupture, and what to do if you get stuck inside.
How to Find the Underground Caves
While roaming the terrain in StarRupture, you’ll come across unusual alien resources, ore outcroppings, and bug infestations. Most of these are easy to gather, mine, or fend off using your hands, harvester, or weapon. However, eventually, you’ll find a patch of dense vines that can’t be dug up or destroyed with your tools.
So far, at least ten of these underground caves have been discovered, with more expected as the game progresses and updates roll out. These vine-covered caves are rich in resources, but they only stay accessible for a short time after a rupture wave passes. Once the vines grow back, the cave closes again.
The first cave you’re likely to find is near a calcium ore deposit north of the Orbital Lander site or south of the Orbiter as you head toward the toxic green biome.
To unlock the map, complete the Moon Energy Corporation Level 3 contract at the Corporate Terminal in your Habitat.
How to Locate These Caves on the Map
As you explore or activate a Geo Scanner, you’ll see large patches on the map indicating where these caves might be. Initially, these spots will appear as question marks. As you get closer, a circle icon will show up on the map, indicating the presence of a nearby cave.
How to Enter the Underground Cave
To enter the cave system, wait for a rupture wave to pass while you’re safe inside your Habitat. Once the wave finishes, you can head outside. The opening of the cave will be visible after a rupture, with the vines temporarily gone and the entrance open.
Approach the open hole — you can climb down the dead, white vines or carefully jump in, using your boost to avoid fall damage. The cave remains accessible only when it’s dark outside, and it will close once the planet begins its recovery.
Make sure to scout the area around your base ahead of time to identify the nearest vine-covered pit. Wait in your Habitat until it’s safe to go out, which is when the temperature drops, but the environment remains dark and dusty. Then, make your way directly to the cave entrance.
How to Access Inside the Cave
Once inside, the vines blocking the entrance will have disappeared, revealing the cave interior. Use the dead, white vines to climb down or carefully drop in, utilizing your boost to slow your fall. The caves are only open during the planet’s dark phases, so time is limited.
Inside the tunnels, you’ll find rare resources like Glow Cap fungi and Quartz Ore, which can only be gathered here. Use your crouch ability to access tight spaces and your boost to hop over ledges. Explore thoroughly to collect all resources, as opportunities to explore these caves are rare.
Resources Found Inside the Cave
- Glow Caps: Gathered by hand from tall, yellow fungus-like plants.
- Quartz Ore: Extracted from blue crystal formations.
These resources are essential for crafting items such as Quartz Building Materials and various types of Res Plasm to protect against infection, corrosion, or other hazards.
Because the caves are limited in availability — typically only two or three before the planet’s activities cause them to close again — it’s crucial to maximize your resource gathering during each visit.
How to Exit the Cave
Getting out is straightforward if you can reach the entrance. Simply climb back up the dead vines to surface. If the vines have closed over the hole, you’ll need to attack the red, bulbous part of the vine at the entrance with your Harvester and blast until it pulls away. You only have about 20 seconds to escape before the vines seal the entrance again.
