The Sims 4 expansion, Adventure Awaits, adds a new skill for your Sim: Entomology, the study of insects. Your Sim will be especially interested in bugs that hover around flowers and plants.
Gibbi Point has many outdoor spots where your Sim can catch butterflies and moths for their collection. They can keep the bugs in habitats, observe them closely, and learn more about these fascinating creatures. Here’s what you need to know about increasing your Sim’s Entomology skill.
How to Raise Butterflies and Moths
Start by raising caterpillars until they turn into butterflies or moths. To begin, go into Build Mode, search for Objects By Function, then Activities and Skills. In the outdoor activities list, you’ll find the Flutteranium Caterpillar Incubator for 15 Simoleons and the Gibbi Point Butterfly and Moth Habitat for 600 Simoleons.
Buy the incubator and place it on an outdoor table. Set the habitat nearby in your garden. To start rearing a caterpillar, select the Flutteranium Incubator and choose “Start Raising a Caterpillar.” There are 13 different species of butterflies and moths, plus an “Unknown” species. When your Sim is just starting out with the skill, only the unknown is available. As your skills improve, more types become unlocked.
Caterpillars grow quickly, turning into cocoons and then into butterflies or moths within hours. Your Sim needs to feed the caterpillar regularly, usually every few hours. After about six hours, it’ll become a cocoon, and a few hours later, you can read to it to help it emerge as a butterfly or moth. The whole process from cocoon to adult bug takes roughly 12 hours. Once your butterfly or moth is ready, transfer it to the Gibbi Point habitat to study and increase your skill.
How to Increase Your Entomology Skill
You can boost your Sim’s Entomology level by engaging with bugs in different ways. You might:
- Read Entomology books bought from the bookcase.
- Observe the caterpillar in the incubator.
- Read to the cocoon.
- Examine the cocoon closely.
- Study each butterfly or moth in the habitat.
Your Sim will learn faster if they are feeling focused.

All Butterflies and Moths
You can only catch moths and butterflies at Gibbi Point. While they are visible in other neighborhoods, capture is only possible there. Once caught, they are unlocked as outdoor decorations, and can be placed anywhere. Moths appear only at night, while butterflies flutter during the day.
If you’re having trouble locating specific butterflies, your Sim’s notebook provides clues. Open the Household Collections section, hover over the butterfly or moth, and see the hint to find their exact location.
