In Octopath Traveler 0, rare monsters mainly include Caits and Octopuffs. Defeating these creatures gives a lot more experience points (EXP) and job points (JP) than most other enemies, making them ideal for leveling up your team. Since the game features many recruitable characters, finding ways to increase your chances of encountering these rare foes is highly beneficial.
There are several methods to improve your chances of running into Caits and Octopuffs. Using a combination of these strategies can make the chances so high that these monsters won’t seem that rare anymore.
### Where Can Caits and Octopuffs Be Found?
Caits spawn in numerous areas, though it’s unclear exactly where they don’t appear. Many players believe they are present in more locations than absent, including side dungeons, routes between towns, and even important story stages like castles. The types of Caits you encounter depend on the level of the zone: regular Caits are common in early-game areas, while Chubby Caits appear in later, higher-level zones. Higher-tier Caits drop more EXP—early on, 1,000 EXP is a lot, and even mid-game, it’s significant. In the late game, 5,000 EXP is especially valuable.
Octopuffs are sea creatures, so you can only find them in the Middlesea and Outersea regions. You’ll need your boat, the Queen Orsa, to explore these areas.
### How to Improve Your Odds
Finding rare monsters isn’t solely about chance. They often try to flee immediately, usually with their first or second action. To catch them, use high-accuracy attacks and apply moves that reduce their speed or delay their turn, making escape less likely.
### Ways to Maximize Your Chances
You can combine certain tactics to boost your likelihood of encountering rare monsters:
#### More Rare Monsters Mastery
This is a Support Skill you can equip on a character. It’s called “More Rare Monsters” and does not stack if multiple are equipped. I found one in a blue chest at Snowshard Grotto, which requires you to complete up to Chapter 5 of the “Kindlers of the Flame” arc and upgrade the church twice. Unlocking blue chests is highly recommended because many of the best items in the game are found in them.
#### Lucky Coin
The Lucky Coin is an accessory that works similarly to the More Rare Monsters skill. Equipping it increases your chances of encountering rare foes. If you combine it with the skill, your odds double. To get the Lucky Coin, recruit Tressa and progress through the “Kindlers of the Flame” arc until you can perform the “Inquire Further” action. Inquire twice—she’ll ask for a Tressalad the second time—and the coin is yours.
Eventually, you can build Silver and Gold versions of Cait and Octopuff by collecting Cait Whiskers and Octopus Suction Cups and exchanging them at Wishvale for better versions. However, these upgraded creatures won’t increase encounter chances but will boost EXP and JP gained from defeated foes.
### A Spoiler-y Tip
Later in the game, a specific party member can help prevent Caits and Octopuffs from fleeing altogether. Equip them with “Dance of Sloughs” to lower their accuracy and evasion and push them to the back of the turn order. With helpers, Soulstones, high accuracy, and a bit of luck, capturing these monsters becomes much easier.
In the final story arc, Bargello joins your team and has a skill that guarantees he acts first in battle. This means he beats even Caits and Octopuffs to the attack. Although a surprise attack often triggers the highest Speed-based action, your first move is assured. Bargello isn’t the strongest character overall but is perfect for quickly gaining EXP.
