Melinoe’s journey in Hades 2 doesn’t end after defeating Chronos. While using the Oath of the Unseen isn’t required to make runs harder, doing so will earn you a special reward—becoming Night’s Champion.

Like with Zagreus, Schelemeus will challenge Melinoe to clear the Underworld and the surface at higher fear levels. You can combine different Vows to meet these thresholds, giving players a chance to try out various modifiers and strategies.

Updated December 23rd, 2025, by Kaitlyn Peterson: Changes were made to include new content and updates after version 1.0, and recommendations have been adjusted accordingly.

How to Become Night’s Champion

After a few runs with the active Oath of the Unseen, talk to Schelemeus. He’ll explain how you can become Night’s Champion.

When you visit the Altar of the Unseen, a note on the left shows the fear level needed to unlock each rank. Once you complete a run, that level will be checked off.

Both the underworld and surface routes have their own fear requirements for each rank. You need to finish both routes at each level to move forward, which means completing at least six runs in total.

Note: The fear requirements for the surface route are lower because it is generally more challenging than the underworld route.

You’re not obligated to use specific weapons or Vows. The best approach depends on your play style, but often, it’s smarter to focus on maxing out one Vow before moving to the next.

Which Vows to Take to Become Night’s Champion

Once the active Vow of the Unseen is chosen, you’ll see a menu showing the different Vows. These Vows help you reach the maximum fear level needed for the title. Here are some effective options to consider:

  • Vow of Rivals: Focuses on boss fights, helping you generate Fear efficiently with minimal impact on overall runs.
  • Vow of Menace: Causes enemies from the next region to appear earlier, though their difficulty stays the same.
  • Vow of Return: Enemies can respawn as Revenants, which can be manageable if you handle them quickly.
  • Vow of Hubris: Limits your maximum Magick when you upgrade Boons higher than common, but this can be less problematic if you have The Unseen Arcana.
  • Vow of Hordes: Adds more enemies per fight, lengthening encounters.
  • Vow of Shadow: Mini-bosses will have extra minions, which can be avoided depending on your chosen rewards.
  • Vow of Grit: Enemies have more health, meaning longer fights but no increased difficulty.
  • Vow of Wards: Longer battles due to additional barriers.
  • Vow of Time: Sets a time limit per region; remaining time carries over to the next, stacking up.

Tip: It’s usually best to start with Vows that strengthen enemies before using ones that weaken Melinoe, as reducing Melinoe’s power impacts your approach more than buffing enemies.

Best Build for Becoming Night’s Champion

For weapons, use what you are most comfortable with. While some weapons are technically stronger, familiarity will help you most.

Recommended Arcana:

  • Death
  • The Unseen
  • The Moon
  • The Wayward Sun
  • Divinity

These Arcana improve health and Magick regen, unlock better Boons, provide Death Defiances, and increase access to Hexes—important advantages in tougher runs.

Familiar:

  • Toula is highly recommended because she deals high damage and grants an extra Death Defiance. Upgrading her abilities will boost your chances of success.

Trinkets:

  • Start with the Moon Beam, which grants easy access to Hex.
  • After the first region, swap to the Aromatic Phial for a bonus upon using fountains.
  • For the third region, switch to the Concave Stone to potentially gain extra Boons.
  • In the final region, choose either the Engraved Pin or the Luckier Tooth, based on your play style, as both can be lifesavers.

Best Boons for Becoming Night’s Champion

Focus on obtaining Boons from Hephaestus, Hestia, and Demeter. Ideal picks include:

  • Primary Strike: Hestia
  • Favour: Hephaestus
  • Cast: Demeter

Their paired Duo Boons are particularly powerful, such as Freezer Burn, which deals extra damage when freezing burned enemies, and Cryo Pounder, which boosts damage on frozen foes.

Hex: Prioritize Moon Water if offered, as it grants health restoration and upgrades. If unavailable, alternatives like Phase Shift and Total Eclipse are strong choices.

Tip: Hermes and Hera can provide useful benefits, but with the recommended build, you can fill any gaps as needed to unlock the title of Night’s Champion.
