The final Treasures of Ruin event has arrived in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. Of all the battles so far, Chi-Yu might be the easiest of the dark, shiny legendaries. Still, going into its raid den unprepared is not advisable.
With its strong offensive abilities, Chi-Yu demands a solid defense if you want to survive long enough to win. If you manage to defeat this quick fish, you’ll receive a variety of helpful items to boost your Pokémon’s strength and get closer to adding this rare shiny legendary to your team.
Shiny Chi-Yu is part of the last segment of the Treasures of Ruin event. During this part, you cannot catch Shiny Chi-Yu directly in the raid; instead, you’ll get it as a Mystery Gift once the community has achieved 1,000,000 victories collectively.
You can fight Chi-Yu alone or with friends, but it’s best to be connected to the internet during raids to ensure your victory counts.
This event runs only from September 1, 12:00 a.m. UTC to September 14, 11:59 p.m. UTC in 2025.
Wo-Chien and Chien-Pao are available now through Mystery Gifts, and Shiny Ting-Lu will be coming soon. All three Pokémon have met their community defeat requirements.
If you haven’t defeated any yet, don’t worry. Anyone with a Nintendo Online account and an internet connection can claim these Pokémon as Mystery Gifts. To do so, connect online, go to your Pokémon menu, select Mystery Gift, and choose “Get via Internet.” You can claim each one once per profile, along with 40 extra Tera Shards for every 100,000 victories above 1,000,000.
Defeating Chi-Yu grants rewards such as Fire Tera Shards, Exp. Candies (Large and Extra Large), Rare Candies, Bottle Caps, Vitamins like PP Up and Calcium, Ability Patches, Modest Mints, Herba Mysticas, and other valuable items like Nuggets and Star Pieces.
Chi-Yu’s abilities include the Beads of Ruin, which lowers the Special Defense of all Pokémon except itself by 25% from the start of battle. It uses Ruination twice—once at the beginning and again when the timer hits 50%. Its movepool is limited to Fire and Dark moves, primarily using Heat Wave and Snarl, which can reduce the target’s Special Attack.
Most effective Pokémon against Chi-Yu are those capable of physical attacks, especially Water, Rock, or Ground types, or Pokémon with secondary Fairy, Fighting, or Dark typing. High Special Defense and HP are beneficial.
Some tested Pokémon include Terrakion, Poliwrath, Azumarill, Crawdaunt, Urshifu-Rapid, Coalossal, Hisuian Arcanine, Garchomp, Tyranitar, Kyogre, and Primarina. These Pokémon resist Chi-Yu’s moves and can dish out significant damage with moves like Stone Edge, Liquidation, Surging Strikes, and Earthquake.
Avoid Pokémon like Quaquaval and Greninja, as their defenses may not withstand Chi-Yu’s attacks despite appropriate typings. Also, Role Play won’t transfer Chi-Yu’s ability, so plan accordingly.
Chi-Yu’s fight differs from previous Vessels of Ruin. It uses Ruination twice and steals your Tera Orb charge at 85% on the timer, which makes the first half of the battle the most challenging. Its Beads of Ruin activate at the start, reducing the Special Defense of your team.
To prepare, use the initial phase to set up weather, passively heal with moves like Aqua Ring, or boost stats with Cheer or status moves. The first round is best spent in preparation, as your Terrastallization will be delayed. Once you overcome this, focus on building your Tera meter and dealing damage.
Note the points in the battle when Chi-Yu will remove all stat changes and ability effects—after 50% and when its health drops below 45%. Making status moves after these points is safe, but be mindful of Snarl’s Debuff, which can decrease your Special Attack.
With perseverance and teamwork, you can defeat this fish. Once you’ve scored one victory, you have 999,999 wins to go! Between attempts, remember that the ongoing Shiny Outbreaks let you catch Charcadet from Paldea, Vulpix from Kitakami, and Numel from the Indigo Disc—so catch ’em all!
