Wuchang: Fallen Feathers
In this game, you encounter enemies suffering from a disease called Feathering. This causes feathers to grow all over their bodies, causes memory loss, and eventually transforms them into frightening, monster-like beings with no human features. As you progress, you’ll see many of these Feathered enemies.
The Soulwood is different. Instead of changing due to Feathering, it is formed from the souls of those who were trapped and burned alive at Doomwillow Beach. These souls have gathered into the giant, destructive tree seen before you, although it remains just a tree inhabited by spirits.
Preparation For The Soulwood
Throughout Doomwillow Beach, you’ll fight various enemies, but some of the most unique are the tree enemies. They are stationary like real trees but hit very hard. Like trees, they are very weak to fire. Igniting them completely stops their movement.
The Soulwood shares this weakness, making it easier for you to defeat. Before facing the Soulwood, just before you go down to the fight area, you can get a powerful Fire Spell by defeating a special enemy. Fire is your best tool here—whether by tempering your weapon to set it on fire or using spells. By the time you reach the Soulwood, you should have three fire spells ready, so be sure to equip at least one.
The fight with the Soulwood isn’t too complicated. Its projectiles can cause Corruption buildup, which can kill you if it fills up. Bring some Purple Camelias to prevent this or treat it as a minor concern.
The Soulwood’s Strengths and Weaknesses
The Soulwood is a boss that, like other trees in Doomwillow Beach, remains completely still during the fight. It stays at the back of the arena and always has some part that you can hit with melee attacks. However, getting close can make it hard to see what the rest of the body is doing, so be careful.
Since it’s stationary, the Soulwood controls the arena. It can summon smaller vines to attack from the ground. These vines are also fixed in place and have their own health bars, so you must stay alert and keep moving to dodge attacks.
Although not an attack, the water surrounding the boss causes Despair buildup. If this buildup fills up, it will kill you instantly.
Most of the damage the Soulwood deals comes from its physical attacks, especially blunt damage. These attacks hit hard, so it’s good to have some defense against blunt damage. Heavier armor sets like the Ming set can help here.
One major weakness is fire damage. Using fire to attack the boss is highly effective and can make the fight much easier. Before fighting, consider using spells or setting your weapon on fire with Tempering. Using one-handed swords can boost fire spell damage and spellpower, especially if you upgrade in the Impetus Repository.
Reborn Treant – Soulwood’s Moveset
The Soulwood isn’t very aggressive and has a limited set of moves. Here’s what it can do:
Attack |
Description |
Counter |
---|---|---|
Vacuum |
The boss leans down and sucks you toward it, even from a distance. You’ll be pulled into its Despair pool. |
Run away in the opposite direction or dodge. Dodging takes stamina but is effective. |
Arena Fire Breath |
The boss glows orange and releases a wide blast of fire across the arena center. |
Stay to the sides when you see the glowing head. Flames last only a few seconds. |
Arm Slam |
The boss pulls back its arm and slams it to the ground close to you. The arm stays on the ground briefly, causing damage if it pulls out. |
Since the boss is stationary, dodge the small hitbox by attacking from the sides to stay safe as it pulls back. |
Vine Summon |
Vines rise from the ground suddenly to attack you. They stay in place and can appear anywhere. |
Vines are easy to dodge and disappear after a short time. You don’t need to bother destroying them. |
Vine Whip |
The vines spin and attack you. |
Easily dodged. Can cause brief staggering if hit. |
Vine Slam |
The vines perform a slamming attack. |
Easy to dodge, but it deals more damage than the whip. |
Corruption Projectile |
If you get too far away, the boss fires orbs that cause Corruption on impact. |
Stay close to the boss, and you probably won’t see or be affected by this attack. |
The main challenge is keeping track of your position. Stay mobile or you’ll be overwhelmed by vines summoning. Keep moving to avoid being hit and to stay alive.
How To Beat Reborn Treant – Soulwood
The Battle
Winning against the Soulwood is simple: bring fire and keep moving. That’s all you need to do. The fight might take longer without fire, but it’s still doable. Using fire will help you burn through its health quickly.
The best strategy is to use spells, which keep you at a safe distance. This way, you avoid the Despair pool and deadly melee attacks. Vines can also be used to activate Shimmer, gaining more Skyborn Might for your spells. While spells are useful, using one-handed swords with the Biding Time passive and upgrade bonuses increases spell damage.
Just remember: Avoid the Despair pool and attack with fire. That’s the key to victory.
The Rewards
Defeating the Soulwood opens the path to the Tang Palace and unlocks a new Shrine where you can heal and save your progress. You also gain the Echo of Soulwood Spell, which fires the same Corruption orbs used by the boss.
Additionally, you receive the Alltree Jade Cylinder. You can give this to Tao Qing back in the Shu Sanctum to unlock new items. Now, you’re ready for the next and toughest boss in the game.
