God of War: Sons of Sparta is a new 2D side-scrolling game that tells the story of a young Kratos, the fierce god slayer everyone knows. Like the main games, it features a variety of mythological enemies eager to kill you.
One of these enemies is Ioke, a giant metal bird, and one of the first bosses you’ll face. This battle is your first test of the game’s combat system. Ioke’s moves can be tough because of his attacks that cover the entire screen. Here’s how to defeat him:
How to Defeat Ioke
When the fight starts, Ioke will have three main attacks:
-
Buzzsaw Spin: Ioke spins rapidly like a buzzsaw across the screen at high speed. This attack can’t be blocked or parried, so you need to roll through it to avoid damage. Watch for the spin to end, then wait before you roll again. Once he rushes toward you, dodge to the side, then prepare for him to turn and do the same move again.
-
Wind Tornado: Ioke hovers in the air and shoots out a large wind tornado. You can either block it or dodge away. Blocking is safer since you’re unlikely to hit him while he’s airborne. If you prefer to dodge, roll aside to escape the tornado’s reach because it doesn’t go very far.
-
Ground Slam: Ioke glows purple and then slams his body into the ground, creating shockwaves forward and backward. Jump over the shockwaves and quickly run toward Ioke while he’s stunned. During this brief time, you can hit him a few times.
After taking enough damage, Ioke will fly into the air and glowing yellow beams will appear around the arena, showing his flight path. Move out of the light before he crashes down. After he lands, he’ll slam again, creating another shockwave, which you can jump over.
Repeated Attacks and Increasing Difficulty
Ioke repeats these attacks, but each time he does, they become more numerous:
- The buzzsaw spin will go across the arena three times instead of two.
- He will launch multiple shockwaves during the slam.
- The indefinite attack where he slams with purple glow repeats more times.
Throughout the fight, focus on avoiding damage. Only counterattack when he’s momentarily stunned after a slam. Stay alert especially when he’s about to perform the purple slam because that’s your best chance to land hits.
Once Ioke’s health drops below one-third, the fight escalates:
- He will fly around the arena more often.
- When he slams into the ground, attack him immediately afterward.
- Keep dodging and stay out of his attack range.
This fight is mostly about dodging and timing your attacks carefully. Be patient and wait for the right moment—particularly after his slam—when he’s vulnerable. Defeating Ioke rewards you with a cutscene of him flying away and grants you the Razor Plume item.
