Wuchang: Fallen Feathers – The Great Centipede Boss Guide
As you progress through Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, you’ll encounter more monsters, many affected even more by the Feathering disease. One of these bosses is the Great Centipede, which still shows parts of its human past despite its transformation.
The Great Centipede is a tough boss, quite different from others you’ve fought. Its large size makes it easy to get hit by its wide attacks, and its quick movements can catch you off guard. But once you learn its attack patterns, you’ll see that it’s not as unstoppable as it seems.
Where Do You Fight the Great Centipede?
The fight takes place in the Bandit Cave, located at the end of the Mercury Mines, accessible through an underground passage from the Shu Sanctum. Beating this boss is necessary because it unlocks access to Doomwillow Beach.
There’s a shrine conveniently placed just outside the arena, making it easier to prepare before the fight. The Bandit Cave itself is small, mainly containing the boss fight, so you won’t need to worry about other enemies during this encounter.
Preparation for the Fight
Generally, you don’t need much to prepare for the Great Centipede. Your essential item is Shimmer, which you get from the Impetus Repository. Practicing your dodges is key to maintaining your Skyborn Might, regardless of your weapon choice.
The boss can release a cloud of purple mist that increases your Corruption quickly. To counter this, equip some Purple Camelias, which you likely found while exploring the Mercury Mines.
When you lose your Red Mercury after dying in a boss fight, your Inner Demon won’t spawn regardless of your Madness level. Feel free to increase your Madness to boost your damage during battles.
The most important item to equip is the Dracolich Pendant. Found early in the Mercury Mine, it prevents enemies’ roars from making you flinch. Without flinching, you have more time to attack during their roar animations instead of being forced into quick dodges.
Beyond that, choose gear based on your playstyle. Since the boss’s attacks involve many slashes, consider armor that boosts resistance to slashing damage. Having some ranged spells can also be helpful since the boss doesn’t seem to have particular weaknesses.
Great Centipede’s Strengths and Weaknesses
The boss doesn’t have many special defenses, so all damage types should be effective. It tends to pause after many moves, giving opportunities to strike. Weapons like the Axe can be useful here because of their high damage potential. If you’re having trouble dodging, blocking could help against some of its faster attacks.
It has powerful physical attacks, mainly using its claws to deal heavy Slash damage. Increasing your resistances to this damage makes the fight easier. It can also summon a purple cloud that causes Corruption, so use Purple Camelias and raise your resistance to manage this effect.
Finally, when its health gets low, it can create a large magic circle that fires beams. This attack is slow but deals magic damage, and the boss is mobile during it. Don’t forget to boost your magic resistance to withstand this attack.
Great Centipede’s Moveset
Most of the Great Centipede’s attacks involve its claws, which deal slash damage. Here’s a breakdown of its key moves:
| Attack | Description | Counter |
|---|---|---|
| Claw Advance Dash | The boss dashes toward you while slamming its pincers into the ground. | Move towards the boss while dodging into the attack. It struggles to change direction, so you get an opening to hit from behind. |
| Tail Swing | The boss spins in place, attacking nearby. It repositions slightly during this move. | Watch for the claw rubbing together before the spin. Dodge towards the boss after the spin to stay close and attack. |
| Leap Slam | The boss leaps at you suddenly to close the gap. | Since it tracks well, dodge just before it lands to stay close. |
| Claw Grab | The boss reels back with its claws then dives forward to grab. | Dodge away to avoid being caught. Its range is short, so it’s easy to dodge. |
| Claw Swipes | A quick series of slashes directly in front of the boss. | Dodge sideways to avoid extra hits after the initial attack. |
| Magic Circle | If its health is low, it summons a large magic circle that fires beams. | Keep moving to avoid the beams. They track poorly, so constant movement helps. |
| Death From Below | The boss burrows underground, attacking four times before resurfacing. | Don’t attack during this phase. Dodge immediately when the ground turns orange and keep moving to avoid damage. |
| Corruption Mist | Summons purple mist clouds that cause Corruption buildup. | Run far from the mist. This can bait the Leap Slam, giving more time to dodge. |
| Roar | The boss roars, causing a flinch and low damage. | Equip the Dracolich Pendant to negate this attack, then hit the boss hard during the roar. |
| Foot Slam | The boss raises its leg to slam down when standing nearby. | Dodge or run to the side during charge-up to strike while it’s vulnerable. |
| Tail Swipes | The boss whips its tail around to attack from behind. | Move to the front of the boss during the animation to counterattack. |
| Charged Tail Spin | It grabs and charges its tail, then unleashes a long-distance spin attack. | Block or use flicker techniques if available; cooldown periods follow. |
Overall, surviving this boss relies heavily on dodging. Stay close to it to avoid fast movements, only backing away when it summons Corruption mist. Timing your dodges well is essential to avoid its powerful physical and magic attacks.
Tips for Defeating the Great Centipede
The Fight Strategy
The fight is more about endurance than burst damage. The boss’s attacks aren’t overwhelmingly strong individually, but it has a large health pool, so most of your time will be spent slowly whittling down its health.
Because of its size, you’ll often be attacking from its front or back. You can target either end to maximize your damage. Keep attacking to break its stance; when the attack indicator fills, use an Obliterate (critical) attack. Continuous attacking is important because stopping reduces your staggering progress.
Besides direct damage, environmental objects like pillars can be used for damage. Lure the boss into dashing into them — this causes significant damage and stuns the boss briefly. Use this opportunity to attack safely.
The key to victory is learning its move cues, dodging wisely, and maintaining high Madness levels to increase damage output and perks active from the Impetus Repository.
Rewards for Defeating the Great Centipede
After winning, access to Doomwillow Beach opens, and you’ll receive several items, including:
