Like its predecessor, Pokémon Legends: Z-A is divided into Main Missions that you need to complete to finish the game. There are 42 Main Missions in total, but the story effectively concludes around Main Mission 38. After that point, deciding to pursue additional post-game content is up to you.
If your goal is to fully complete Pokémon Legends: Z-A, don’t focus solely on Main Missions. You’ll also need to complete the Pokédex, gather items across Lumiose, and finish over 100 Side Missions for local residents.
How Long Does It Take to Finish?
Pokémon games tend to have similar completion times if you’re just aiming to finish the main story. For Pokémon Legends: Z-A, the average player reports completing the story in about 24 hours, which is roughly a full day.
(Note: This estimate assumes you stick mainly to the story and don’t spend extra time shiny hunting, capturing Pokémon you don’t plan to use, or engaging in other activities that extend playtime. It also excludes the Mega Dimension DLC, which adds more story content.)
How Long to Achieve 100% Completion?
If you want to do everything—like completing the Pokédex with all 230 Pokémon—the time required increases significantly. On average, a full completion run takes about 50 hours, nearly twice as long as just finishing the main story.
Keep in mind, this 50-hour estimate assumes you’re not heavily occupied with shiny hunting, looking for rare Alphas, or doing other extra tasks that can extend gameplay. Since this is a Nintendo-exclusive game, there are no official achievement trackers for 100% completion, so it’s somewhat subjective and depends on what you consider ‘done.’
Skill level and team strength also influence these times. Players new to Pokémon or still learning mechanics might take longer, while experienced players with strong teams may finish faster. So, expect the 100% completion time to vary more than the time needed to complete Main Missions.
How Many Missions Are There?
The main story is broken into Main Missions. There are a total of 42 Main Missions in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. However, the story officially wraps up around Mission 38. The remaining missions focus on capturing legendary Pokémon and other post-story content.
The length of each mission varies. Many involve participating in the Z-A Royale to earn Challenge Tickets or defeating Rogue Megas in groups of three.
In addition, there are 119 Side Missions. These are optional and mostly quick to complete—usually taking just a minute or two—making them worthwhile for the rewards they offer, even if you’re not aiming for 100% completion.
Aside from completing the game, there’s still plenty to explore and do after finishing the last mission. You can check out the Mega Dimension DLC or participate in online ranked battles to earn Mega Evolution stones for all three Kalos starters, which can only be obtained through these battles.
