Combat in Borderlands 4 has evolved significantly. With more tools available in your arsenal, you can fight more smoothly and aggressively, even on the toughest levels. One of the new features is the Ordnance System, which boosts your attack power and helps improve your overall build.
Since the Ordnance System is new to the series, there are some important things you should know before using it. Once you understand how it works, the game’s combat becomes not only easier but more enjoyable.
### What Is The Ordnance System?
This system is designed to keep your focus on fighting rather than worrying about ammunition limits for your weapons. In earlier games like Borderlands 3, players only had four weapon slots plus a grenade mod slot. That made choosing weapons more careful and strategic.
Now, in Borderlands 4, you still have a limit, but you get one extra slot. This means you can equip five different weapons instead of four. The Ordnance System is what allows this. As you defeat enemies, they will drop weapons, including heavy weapons like LMGs, rocket launchers, and plasma cannons.
These heavy weapons can be placed in the Ordnance Slot once you find them. While you can still use grenade mods, having heavy weapons gives you more options. If you equip a heavy weapon, it’s smart to switch back and forth between it and your other guns during tough fights. This way, you can deal more damage.
With this system, you’ll often have five guns ready to use, instead of just four.
### How Does The Ordnance System Work?
The Ordnance System categorizes your heavy items into two types: grenade mods and heavy weapons. While both are similar, they operate differently.
#### How Grenade Mods Work
Grenade mods now have charges, meaning you can only throw them a limited number of times based on how many charges they have. For example, some grenade mods may have two charges, while legendary ones might have seven. After using all charges, there’s a cooldown period that needs to pass before you can use the grenade again. This cooldown varies depending on the mod. When selecting grenade mods, check their cooldown stat to ensure you can reuse them quickly when needed.
#### How Heavy Weapons Work
Heavy weapons also require ammo, which acts as a countdown until the weapon can no longer be fired. When you run out of ammo, you’ll need to wait for the cooldown period to finish before reusing the heavy weapon. The cooldowns differ from one heavy weapon to another. When you pick up a heavy weapon, you can see how long its cooldown lasts in its tooltip. Note that you can’t use heavy weapons during Fight for Your Life mode, and if you don’t fire a shot while using them, some weapons may avoid a cooldown, allowing you to switch back quickly.
This system gives you more flexibility and power, making combat more dynamic and tactical.
