Like most survival RPGs, Of Ash and Steel lets you customize your character’s stats to suit your style. There’s no clear right or wrong way to do this, but focusing on certain key stats early on can make the game easier.

Spreading your points evenly across all stats might seem like a good idea, but it’s usually not the best strategy—especially in Of Ash and Steel. It’s better to prioritize the stats that will be most useful to you in the long run, so it’s important to understand how each one impacts your character.

Every Attribute and What They Do

In Of Ash and Steel, you’ll need to assign ability points to five main stats during your playthrough. These are:

  • Strength: This stat is pretty straightforward. Increasing it lets you do more melee damage, use heavier weapons, and lift larger objects. It’s ideal if you prefer close combat and a more aggressive fighting style.

  • Dexterity: If you want to focus on finesse rather than brute force, this is the stat for you. Higher Dexterity boosts your ability to move efficiently and use ranged weapons more effectively.

  • Stamina: More stamina means you can run, dodge, swim, or fight longer before getting tired. It’s a simple but important stat that supports sustained physical activity.

  • Insight: This stat influences your ability to persuade others or ask the right questions during conversations. Improving Insight helps you speak more convincingly and gather more information from NPCs. It also increases your chances of landing critical hits.

  • Fortitude: Vital for defense, increasing Fortitude raises your maximum health and damage resistance. If you want to endure more punishment, investing here is a good choice.

Which Attribute Should I Prioritize?

There’s no single correct way to assign your points, as each stat offers unique benefits that shape your playstyle. Every time you level up, you get three points to allocate however you like.

While spreading points across all stats isn’t terrible, it keeps your character fairly balanced without specialization. To really stand out, try to figure out your preferred combat style—whether melee or ranged—and develop those stats accordingly. Specializing allows you to play to your strengths and cover your weak points more effectively.

Tips for Assigning Stats

You don’t need to put your points into a stat immediately when you earn them. If you’re unsure about your focus early on, hold onto your points until you decide what kind of player you want to be. You’ll continue earning points through quests and activities without spending the ones you’ve saved.

However, don’t wait too long to assign your points either. For example, if you prefer to be tough in combat, you might want to invest more in Strength or Dexterity. Generally, it’s best to pick two core stats based on your preferred fighting style and then allocate the remaining points to the others as needed. Avoid focusing on just one stat and ignoring others — a balanced approach with some specialization usually works best.
