Although tools are a key part of the main gameplay in Hollow Knight: Silksong, many of the best options can be hard to find or are hidden away. Luckily, the Plasmium Phial is one tool you can get pretty early if you know where to look, and it’s definitely worth the effort to unlock it.
The only requirement to get this tool is a simple key, which you can buy from several merchants around Pharloom in limited amounts. After you have the key, go to the locked door in the Wormways, located just above the Moss Grotto and accessible by crossing the big gap above Bone Bottom.
Once inside the dark tunnels of the Wormways, head left and then move north through the winding paths to find NPC Alchemist Zylotol. Talk to him and start the “Alchemist’s Assistant” quest. Quickly equip the Needle Phial and head back down to gather the materials he needs. The paths can be confusing, but if you keep track of your location on the map and avoid taking unnecessary damage, you’ll collect the three Plasmium vials needed for one of Hornet’s most powerful tools in no time. Return the samples to Zylotol, and he will give you the tool for free. You can refill it by paying 50 Rosaries for all 20 charges.
The basics of this tool are simple: it lets you charge a temporary mask each time you use it, up to five at once. You can’t regenerate these masks through Silkbinding, but they can be very useful for surviving tough battles or speeding through certain boss fights.
The real strength of the Plasmium Phial comes from its hidden combo potential when used together with the Architect’s Crest. The Crest allows you to craft tools on the fly by binding and holding the up button, which can let you go beyond the five-mask limit.
For example, if you use the Plasmium Phial to make nine masks, Hornet will immediately overdose on the effects and remove the additional masks, replacing your original masks with Plasmium ones. These new masks will regenerate one every six seconds, but Hornet can speed up this process using Silkbind, charging one mask at a time. This technique becomes a key part of some of the most unique and effective playstyles in Silksong.
