Hollow Knight: Silksong’s Putrified Ducts are a helpful area to explore in Stage 2, but they can be hard to find and tricky to get through. You’ll probably come across a convenient entrance to the ducts early on, but until you get the Faydown Cloak and double jump abilities, it won’t be very useful.
To fully access the Putrified Ducts, you need to unlock double jump by climbing Mount Fay before returning to the Choral Chambers. Alternatively, you can enter through Bilewater, but you won’t be able to explore the entire area, and you’ll need to fight Groal the Great along the way.
How to Reach the Putrified Ducts:
Start by jumping up from the long eastern hallway of the Choral Chambers. You can quickly get here from the benches in either the Cogwork Core or Songclave. Break the vines at the top to enter the Memorium area. Immediately go right and rest at a bench.
From the bench, go left to rest again. Then, attack and break the vines on the wall to your right to continue moving right. You’ll face a big enemy here, but you can jump over it and keep going. You’ll see a model of the citadel, where you can spend 70 rosaries to buy a map of the area.
This room seems to have no other exit, but the frayed curtains hanging from the ceiling on the right hide a way out. Double jump up behind the curtains to reach a balcony. Jump off and run across the bridge. You’ll need to do some tricky double jumps to climb the wall here. Once you get the hang of it, you can reach the top, break the wall, and find a tunnel leading into the Putrified Ducts.
Map and Guide to the Putrified Ducts:
Inside the Ducts, you’ll find a long, hazard-filled chamber. Cross it to reach a Bellway station and a bench on your right. The bench costs 60 rosaries, and the Bellway station costs 80.
Go back to the left, drop down, and exit on the left side. Continue to the end of the passage. A vine monster will drag you up to the next level. Move right to find the map of the Putrified Ducts.
Another bench can be found by going downward, breaking some walls, and exiting to the left again. At the bottom of this large chamber, you’ll find a home with the Huntress. She offers a quest to earn the Longclaw tool and provides a makeshift bench to rest.
Your next goal should be obtaining the Apostate Key, which unlocks certain parts of the Slab. Exit the Huntress’s home and head to the upper left corner of the chamber (you may need to move right first to climb up). You can pick up the key there.
Main Highlights in the Ducts:
-
Fleatopia: Located further right in the Pale Lake area of the Ducts, Fleatopia is where the Flea Caravan moves to. It’s important if you’re working on flea quests. You need to return 20 fleas for the caravan to move here, and once you find all 30 fleas in the game, you unlock the Flea Games with extra rewards.
-
Vog the Vendor: At the top of the Ducts, marked on the map, you’ll find Vog. He sells maps of lost fleas, which makes completing flea quests much easier.
-
Late-game Content: After unlocking Act 3, you can use the Silk Soar ability to reach an area above Pale Lake, where you can start the Passing of the Age quest.
Exploring the Putrified Ducts thoroughly will reward you with items like Craftmetal, rosaries, and other resources. Be prepared for tough enemies and environmental hazards, and don’t miss the Wreath of Purity — a tool useful in swampy areas for dealing with Muckmaggots, found in a room to the right above the central chamber.
Once you have the Faydown Cloak, it’s worth visiting the Ducts at least to get the Longclaw tool and the Apostate Key. It’s easy to skip over this area in your run, but completing it is essential for a full experience in Hollow Knight: Silksong.
