To complete the Far Fields area and keep progressing in Hollow Knight: Silksong, you need to get the glide ability. To do that, you’ll first have to accept and finish the quest called “Flexile Spines.”
Although it’s presented as a sidequest or Wish, “Flexile Spines” is actually a key part of the game. The reward for completing it is the Drifter’s Cloak, which lets you glide over long gaps and ride wind currents upward. Getting the cloak also unlocks the area boss and helps you move forward in the story.
How to Start the “Flexile Spines” Quest
Find the Seamstress
The Seamstress is on a raised platform in the Far Fields part of the map. To start the quest, begin from the large central room of Far Fields and make your way up to her hut using your dash ability (Swift Step). If you don’t have the dash yet, head back to the northern part of Deep Docks and interact with the altar there. Note that reaching the altar might involve some combat in the Hunter’s March area.
Steps to reach her:
- Drop to the bottom of the central Far Fields room, landing on the small rocky platform above the lava.
- Jump right onto two small platforms, then into a short corridor.
- Use the wind current to jump to the right.
- Jump and dash back across the wind to the higher left platform.
- Climb the hanging platforms on the left and enter the floating tent.
Inside her home, talk to the Seamstress to accept the “Flexile Spines” quest. She’ll offer to make you a new piece of clothing but needs 25 Spine Cores from various Hoker enemies. You must accept the quest to start collecting Spine Cores.
How to Collect Spine Cores
Unlike other collectibles, Spine Cores aren’t in fixed locations. They can be found wherever Hokeers are, mostly east of the Seamstress’s hut. These floating enemies spawn frequently in those areas. To get the cores, you’ll farm Hokers:
- Attack a Hoker, and it’ll shoot spines in all directions.
- After a few seconds, it’ll grow a new set of spines in a different pattern.
- Look for spines lodged in walls or floors after the Hoker fires.
- Chase the Hoker and attack it to dislodge the spines.
- Pick up the Dislodged Spines as items.
- Remember, spines despawn after a few seconds, so act quickly.
To gather enough cores, attack Hokers, run to collect the spines, then attack again once they’re reloaded. You may need to rest at a bench to respawn Hokers and farm more. With some persistence, you should reach 25 Spine Cores within a few minutes.
Where to Find the Hokers
Hoker #1 is located east of the Seamstress’s hut. From her home:
- Move right and down the hanging platforms back to the wind current area.
- Enter the next room, jump past the Fertid enemy.
- Continue right past two wind currents, jump onto the higher platform, then dash left to reach a floating island.
- The Hoker will be above.
Hoker #2 is further right. Drop down to the platform below; the second Hoker will be straight ahead.
Hoker #3 is higher up. Head right from the previous Hoker, jump between floating platforms until you reach the third Hoker at the top. This one requires aerial attacks and is in a tricky spot, so it might be better to skip it unless you’re after its cores.
Hoker #4 is on the next platform above after reaching the top of the previous room. Continue upward, then cross spikes to find the Hoker floating above.
Hoker #5 is in the same room as #4. Jump across spikes to an island with the Hoker.
Hoker #6 is further right, on a platform surrounded by spikes. It’s harder to reach and might be better skipped.
Once you’ve farmed enough Hokers, go back to the bench in the Seamstress’s hut, rest, and repeat until you reach 25 Spine Cores. Then, return to her to unlock the Drifter’s Cloak (glide). This makes exploring Far Fields much easier and lets you move to new areas like Greymoor, Bellhart, Verdania, and more.
After gaining the glide, you can also revisit the area south of the Seamstress to fight the area boss, Fourth Chorus. It’s a fun fight that tests your new gliding skills.
With all this done, you’ll complete the “Flexile Spines” quest in just a few minutes and be ready for the next chapters of your adventure.
