Today’s Connections puzzle features some unusual categories that incorporate slang and playful phrases designed to trip up anyone relying on strict definitions. I found it somewhat tricky to identify the right pairings, as only faint patterns emerged. To minimize mistakes, you might benefit from some handy hints to guide you toward the correct answers.

Much like how the NYT Letter Boxed puzzle starts off blank, some words in today’s Connections puzzle seem hard to connect. Even though you might encounter one or two words that have similar meanings, sticking to rigid definitions won’t help today. Remember, you only have four guesses to make a mistake, so take your time to explore how the words relate to one another.

Today’s Connections Category Hints

May 3 #692

To navigate today’s puzzle, I found it helpful to consider how words sound rather than their explicit meanings. For instance, the word FIRE has multiple definitions, from literal flames to figurative uses related to passion or excitement. However, to solve today’s puzzle, I needed to think of FIRE in different contexts to identify its correct category.

Here are some hints to help you figure out today’s categories:

  • One category relates to slang you might use when something exciting happens.
  • Another category involves slang used to describe easily defeating someone in a competition.
  • A third category focuses on words that sound similar based on their shapes or structures.
  • The last category includes words representing website domains with an extra letter added.

If you’re looking to dive deeper into clues, consider examining the category titles for additional context. There are also spoilers available for each category if you find yourself needing help with one in particular.

AWESOME

DOPE FIRE LIT SICK

I instantly recognized DOPE from the puzzle. Using it or SICK in everyday conversation to describe something as impressive or cool makes it easy to group it with FIRE and LIT, both of which are commonly used slang terms.

DEFEAT SOUNDLY

CREAM LICK PASTE SMOKE

This portion was a breeze for me, as these slang terms are ones I frequently use. As a fan of competitive gaming, I often mention that I “smoked” my opponent. Similarly, to “CREAM,” “LICK,” or “PASTE” someone means to best them effortlessly, which is also commonly recognized in gaming jargon.

“WILL” CONTRACTIONS WITHOUT THE APOSTROPHE

HELL ILL SHELL WELL

I stumbled upon this answer by accident. I grouped words with two L’s together. I realized later that words like HELL can be read as “He’ll” by adding an apostrophe, just as SHELL translates to “She’ll,” WELL to “We’ll,” and ILL to “I’ll.”

COMP MILK NETI ORGO

This part of the puzzle presented the biggest challenge for me. At first, I thought MILK paired with CREAM due to their culinary connection. However, once I realized COMP represents .com and identified the similar endings in NETI (.net) and ORGO (.org), the category theme became clearer.
