In Winter Burrow, you’ll soon discover that finding granite isn’t as straightforward as it seems. After meeting Aunty and getting the key to the basement to start growing mushrooms, you might think you need to gather granite immediately to repair the stairs. But that’s not quite right. First, you need to focus on helping Bufo the frog by ignoring the stair repair for now. This means repeatedly visiting Aunty, who will give you tasks such as making wooden furniture, fixing the stove, and crafting a shovel.
When you settle into your new home, there’s an early mission to find Aunty by fixing and crossing a bridge. She then gives you the key to the basement, where you’ll need 20 pebbles, 15 pieces of granite, and 2 beachnut biscuits to repair the stairs. However, at this stage, the need for granite can be confusing because you might think it’s required immediately, but it actually isn’t. For now, you can plant mushrooms at the top area, which is all you need. The real need for granite will only come later when you’re ready to gather it easily.
After helping Aunty and returning, you’ll be attacked by an owl and she’ll be carried away – not an ideal situation. Eventually, you’ll find a new path to an area in front of her ruined house, where you’ll find Bufo the frog. Bufo will ask for five pebbles and two twigs, which you can gather from previous locations or your own house. Two good spots to find these are just outside Bufo’s area, underneath some snow-covered roots, and near a log further down from the first piece of granite. Another spot includes a backpack where you’ll find some granite inside.
Once you give Bufo the pebbles and twigs he needs, he’ll supply you with a basic pickaxe and send you on a quest to collect three pieces of granite. These can be found in the same area, in specific locations such as behind a snow-covered log or inside a backpack nearby. Gathering these will provide you with the granite needed for now, and trigger a new questline involving Bufo, pebbles, and flint.
It’s important to know that the granite for fixing the basement stairs isn’t obtainable at this point. You just need patience and continued progress through the game. You’ll only get the crafting recipe for a Granite Pickaxe after completing Bufo’s mission called “An Axe for Bufo” and some other tasks involving a squirrel named Gnawtusk. After finishing those, you’ll finally be able to mine all the granite you want with ease. Until then, keep exploring and focusing on the tasks at hand, and everything will come together in time.
