In Mirthwood, players can discover hidden quests, such as "Shadow In The Night." This quest begins when you visit the Brightoak cemetery, located on the eastern side of town. Look for a note on a chair; reading it will initiate the quest.
The story centers around deciphering strange symbols and marks. Successfully completing this quest can impact your Morality score, making it an excellent way to earn Morality points through side quests.

Search for Clues
Once you start the quest at the Brightoak cemetery, your mission is to hunt for clues about a dangerous creature nearby. All the clues are hidden within Murkwater Marsh, which lies south of Brightoak.
Tip: Quest objectives might appear on your map as a yellow highlighted circle, indicating where to find your next task.
Your first clue is a tattered note located near some ruins. From Brightoak, head south into the marshes and continue straight until you spot a dilapidated wagon. Once you find the wagon, head to the right until you come across the ruins and a note.
Once you read the note, the quest will update to Continue Searching. The last clue you need to find is claw marks on a tree.
Note: You only need to check one tree in Brightoak that has claw markings on it to move forward.
Return to the southbound path. The tree is situated on the left side of the trail, and as you approach, a magnifying glass icon will appear, indicating you can inspect it.
Find Markus
The final goal is to piece together the clues to locate Markus, who you will find at the yellow highlighted circle on the map. When you encounter Markus, you’ll learn that he’s a native villager from Brightoak who transforms into a werewolf.
At this point, you have two choices:
- Kill Markus.
- Spare him.
Choosing to spare Markus grants you +5 Morality, while killing him gives you +5 Renown and various useful items.

Should you decide to kill Markus, one of the rewards will be Markus’ Tooth, which serves as a valuable charm. Whether you want to utilize its benefits or simply sell it, you can trade it for a good amount of money early in the game.

While you may receive better rewards by killing Markus, be aware that doing so can be challenging early in the game. His health can be reduced using a Rusty Iron Sword, but he deals significant damage, making him a dangerous opponent.
A helpful strategy is to lure Markus back into town where the villagers can assist you in defeating him.
