Mega Steelix is one of the many Mega Evolutions available in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. However, getting one takes some time. You can find an Onix fairly early in the game, but you’ll need to wait until later to evolve it into Steelix and then obtain the Steelixite needed to Mega Evolve Steelix. The process is simple but requires patience.

Onix will appear naturally in Wild Zone 14 during the day. To unlock Wild Zone 14, you need to reach Rank D in the Z-A Royale and complete the first twenty main quests, which can be done quickly and usually by halfway through the main story. Once you have Onix, your next step is to evolve it into Steelix.

Where to Find a Metal Coat

To evolve Onix, you’ll need a Metal Coat. You can purchase one after the credits, or get it for free by completing side quests. Side quest #101, “Steadfast as Steel,” or side quest #114, “A Feather for Skarmory,” both reward you with a Metal Coat. Alternatively, you can trade your Onix for a Steelix holding a Metal Coat using the game’s Link Play with Trade Codes. You’ll need a Nintendo Switch Online subscription for online trading, but a free trial is available if you haven’t subscribed yet.

The trade code for exchanging your Onix with a Metal Coat is 0197-0197. After trading your Onix and receiving the Steelix, it will be evolved into Steelix.

How to Get Steelixite for Mega Steelix

Once you have Steelix, you need Steelixite to Mega Evolve it. The easiest way is to visit the Stone Emporium at the Vernal Pokémon Center, located due south of the city. Steelixite can be bought for 70,000 Poké Dollars. Give the Steelixite to your Steelix as a held item, and it will evolve into Mega Steelix.
