God of War: Ragnarok wrapped up its story neatly. Atreus set out on his own to pursue his fate, while the Valhalla DLC showed Kratos learning to forgive himself and stepping into the role of the Norse God of War. Though this chapter has ended, Sony Santa Monica is developing a new game, but no details have been released yet.
There are rumors about a possible return to the Greek world, a metroidvania featuring his brother Deimos from Ghost of Sparta, and even a remastered edition. However, Sony Santa Monica has not confirmed any of these. Recently, Jason Schreier from Bloomberg shared an update, stating that the next project at the studio is progressing well and is significant.
Sony Santa Monica May Be Making Another God Of War Game
He later provided more details on ResetEra, aiming to clarify some confusion among fans. When asked if the project is a new IP, he said:
“I’ll put it this way: it’s not a new IP but it might feel like one. Maybe that’s why people are confused.”
He also mentioned, “Please don’t ask me more questions about this – if I have more information in the future, it will be in an article, not on a forum.” He dismissed the long-standing sci-fi rumors as nonsense.
So, we know it’s not a new IP, and given that Santa Monica has focused mainly on God of War, it seems we may see another installment in this beloved franchise. However, since it might feel like a new IP, there could be some truth to the rumors about Deimos in a metroidvania setting.
It looks like we’ll have to wait for the studio to officially announce the project or for unexpected leaks to reveal more. While the Norse saga has concluded, many believe we haven’t seen the last of Kratos. The dream of seeing him battle through different mythologies continues. The developers even hinted at a possible Egyptian chapter back in God of War 2018.
