There are very few side quests in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers where you might want to intentionally fail, but Li Dingguo’s quest could be one of those rare cases. Depending on what item you want to obtain, failing this sidequest might actually lead to a bigger reward. However, are you willing to accept the moral question that comes with deliberately messing up?
No matter what decision you make, Li Dingguo’s quest often forces you to fail because of its obscure and optional requirements. Following each step carefully is crucial to determining his ultimate fate. Will you take everything from him or choose to save a life?
How to Start Li Dingguo’s Quest: How to Find the First Secret Letter
When you enter Act Two for the first time, you’ll discover Hillswatch. Climb the hill up to the large gate leading to a bridge (before reaching Clouspire Outskirts). There, you’ll find Li Dingguo with Sun Kewang behind the gate, drinking Kong Wine. Talk to both of them and exhaust their dialogue options to receive:
- 3 bottles of Kong Wine
- 3 bowls of Spicy Soup
(Note: Li Dingguo is called Li Dingo at Hillswatch in the game, but his name is Li Dingguo everywhere else. Most likely, this is a translation mistake, so we’ll call him Li Dingguo here.)
Next, continue through Cloudspire Outskirts until you can reach Ai Nengqi. Near his arena is the Rebel Camp Shrine. Close to the shrine, you’ll need to defeat a strong bandit lurking nearby; he holds a key needed for Nengqi and the first Secret Letter. Defeating Ai Nengqi will advance Li Dingguo to his next location.
How to Find Li Dingguo and the Second Secret Letter
Before searching for Li Dingguo, it’s helpful to find an associated item first. Start from the Avian Marsh Shrine, then:
- Leave the shack and immediately turn right.
- Follow the stream straight until you spot an embankment on the right.
- At the corpse, turn left into a short cave (watch out for the clam!).
- After dropping down from the cave ledge, turn left at the fork.
- Proceed straight along a sloping hill path and make a 180-degree turn to climb.
- Keep going straight, passing the bird in the pool, then follow the winding root.
- Eventually, the path leads to a den guarded by two birds. The Secret Letter is in the nest on the right, likely requiring defeating both enemies to grab it safely.
(If you previously opened the ladder shortcut near the shrine, you can start from step six to save time.)
Once you have the Secret Letter, go to the Zhenwu Antechamber where Li Dingguo sits on the left side of the shrine. Talk to him, exhaust his dialogue (which will be twice), then decide whether to give him the Secret Letter or not. Your choice here affects what happens next.
How to Obtain the Serpent Fang
Keep playing normally until you defeat Fierce Tiger. Then, head down a cave path where the Storyteller is seated. Ignore the Storyteller and go through the cave to reach Ferry Overlook. What occurs here depends on your previous decision.
-
If you gave Li Dingguo the Secret Letter, he will know about a traitor in the rebels. As a result, Li Dingguo and Sun Kewang will leave peacefully after you talk to them thoroughly. After resting and returning, you’ll find Serpent Fang lying on the ground where Li Dingguo was—this is the more peaceful, positive ending that avoids a tough fight.
-
If you did not give him the letter, Li Dingguo becomes hostile at Ferry Overlook. To confront him:
- Find the boatman at the docks.
- Behind him, locate a sandy path leading into a cave.
- Li Dingguo will invade as you step inside.
Defeating Li Dingguo in this fight grants you the Serpent’s Fang and also rewards you with a Lustrous Red Feather, a rare item that can max out your weapon’s power.
Additional Tips
- To locate the second Secret Letter efficiently, you can shorten the trip if you’ve previously unlocked the ladder shortcut near the shrine; start from the later step for faster access.
- Deciding not to give the Secret Letter will cause Li Dingguo to become aggressive. In that case, engage him by heading to the docks, then into the cave beyond to confront him directly.
This choice significantly impacts the ending and the items you acquire, influencing how your journey concludes.
