Baldur’s Gate 3 is a story-driven game featuring numerous distinct endings for both custom and origin characters. This setup allows the developers at Larian to introduce some notably dark, evil conclusions to the game. While the all-encompassing evil endings for origin characters tend to be fairly standard, similar outcomes can also be unlocked for your custom character, Tav.
With the release of patch 7, Larian introduced new, unique villainous endings for all characters, including Tav and the Dark Urge. Achieving these outcomes requires specific choices and selecting the appropriate dialogue options at key moments. Since you can only unlock one ending per origin character in a single playthrough, this guide will help you target the desired ending and reveal which options you might have missed.
Warning: This guide contains spoilers regarding the game’s endings and the fates of certain characters.
All Evil Endings for a Custom (Tav) Character
When playing as a customized character in Baldur’s Gate 3, defeating the Elder Brain opens up a variety of endings. Your choices determine whether you side with the Emperor or Orpheus, based on your prior decisions. Aligning with the Emperor results in him gaining control of the Netherbrain, with you serving as his trusted adviser. Be careful not to attack the Emperor after choosing to support him, as he will kill you instead.
Alternatively, you can betray the Emperor and seize the Netherstones. This decision unlocks two possible paths:
- Transform into a Mind Flayer yourself
- Pass a very high Constitution check to avoid becoming a Mind Flayer
Transforming into a Mind Flayer grants you the power to enslave the Baldur’s Gate population, forcing them to turn into mind-controlled minions. If you succeed with the Constitution check, you get several additional options:
- Condemn Baldur’s Gate to destruction
- Command its citizens to kill each other
- Conquer the entire world with the Army of the Absolute
- Brainwash the citizens to rebuild the city, unaware of their fates
These choices culminate in six distinct evil endings for your custom character.
Evil Ending for the Dark Urge
To unlock the new dark ending for the Dark Urge, you must follow Bhaal’s teachings—resist your dark impulses and eliminate everyone Fel instructs you to kill. After killing Orin to become Bhaal’s chosen and completing the necessary steps, you can trigger two additional evil outcomes by talking to your party:
- “You don’t want to see what’s coming. Death is my reward for your service.”
- “Run from me when we land. We will meet again at the end of days, when I shall come for you.”
Choosing the first leads to killing all your party members, destroying Faerûn, and ending the game with a scene of you walking among corpses. The second results in you abandoning your companions temporarily, only to return later to slaughter them all and fully embrace Bhaal’s teachings.
Evil Endings for Origin Characters
There are six origin characters in the game, each with their own unique storylines and potential evil endings. These characters can now access dark conclusions similarly to Tav, once certain conditions are met—namely, defeating the Netherbrain and betraying either Orpheus or the Emperor to claim the Netherstones. Doing so grants control over the Netherbrain and unlocks all Tav’s endings.
In addition to shared endings, each origin character has a one-of-a-kind evil conclusion:
Astarion
After seizing control of the Netherbrain and sitting on the throne, Astarion can choose to wield the Absolute’s power, transforming into the Sun King. His vampire spawn will then ravage Baldur’s Gate.
Gale
By defeating the Emperor or Orpheus and passing the Constitution check, Gale can open a portal commanding the citizens to renounce their gods and attack the divine. He joins the chaos in a destructive rampage.
Karlach
Following the same path of defeating the Emperor and prevailing in the Constitution check, Karlach can declare “The hell with Avernus and Baldur’s Gate,” unleashing hellish demons that burn through the city before she joins in the chaos, tearing out her Infernal Engine.
Lae’zel
Conquering the Netherbrain and eliminating her rivals allows Lae’zel to march on Tu’narath, using the Mind Flayers to overthrow Queen Vlaakith—no collateral damage is off-limits.
Shadowheart
Upon taking control, Shadowheart can order the citizens to eliminate followers of Shar and Selune, establishing her own empire with a new church built in her name.
Wyll
After securing the Netherstones, Wyll can declare himself the ultimate ruler, transforming everyone into Mind Flayers—including his own father—uniting Faerûn under his iron fist forever.
