Today’s Connections Category Hints
FEBRUARY 25 #625
This puzzle features unique mechanics, and the primary challenge is that two of the categories seemed to allow for word swaps. Additionally, I found myself wanting to pair certain words that didn’t belong together in this instance. To help you steer clear of the pitfalls I encountered, here are some clues:
- One category includes terms that describe someone’s feelings about particular topics they frequently discuss.
- Another category features variations of a single word from different regions.
- One group consists of four items that share a common shape.
- One category includes four words that rhyme with something that may not be commonly used today.
If you’re still uncertain, knowing the names of the categories can clarify a lot of the confusion. This knowledge will help you avoid any interchanges of words and properly match the remaining entries. But remember, spoilers are available if absolutely needed.

GUSTO |
PASSION |
RELISH |
ZEST |
This was one of the categories where I had to take a guess or two because I also thought that “MUCHO” and “BEAUCOUP” could fit here. I also found “GUSTO” to have potential connections to some words in the next category if you don’t analyze closely, as it initially appeared to connect better than “MULTI.” However, understanding the categories clarifies the situation, even if some other words may still relate better to the respective categories.

“MANY” IN DIFFERENT LANGUAGES |

---|---|---|---|
BEAUCOUP |
MOLTO |
MUCHO |
MULTI |
I still feel skeptical about “MULTI” fitting here, but it does match the category nonetheless. It might be due to its frequent use in compound terms rather than standing alone, as these words generally do in other languages. Having noted the languages from which many of these terms originate, I can confidently say this is among the first adverbs you learn. “MULTI” simply doesn’t resonate the same way for me, which led to an interesting reflection on language.

RECTANGULAR PRISMS |

---|---|---|---|
BRICK |
FISH TANK |
MICROWAVE |
SHOEBOX |
I interestingly guessed this combination mainly because these four items are “boxy” or rectangular in shape, and thankfully my intuition was correct. Initially, I didn’t really like the name of the category. The term “prism” refers to a specific geometric shape, which brought back memories of high school math, but I prefer to think of prisms strictly as refracting objects.

MORTAR |
PICKLE |
I was really uncertain about this category until I saw “MORTAR,” which I wished could have paired up with “BRICK” here. It would have felt better if those two worked together, but that’s just the archaeologist in me. When I spotted “PICKLE,” I connected it to a previous puzzle, and initially grouped it with “RELISH,” “LIME,” and “ZEST,” which didn’t pan out. Fortunately, I avoided that trap afterward.
