Exploring Every Team-Up Change in Season 3

Marvel Rivals Season 3 is set to launch on July 11, 2025, and it will bring a variety of balance tweaks and updates to Team-Up abilities within the game. While some characters will see enhancements or reductions in their power, the new season will also see the removal of certain Team-Up abilities and the adjustment of others, continuing the trend from previous seasons. Additionally, two new Team-Ups have been announced to highlight the synergy between the game’s heroes and villains.

Season 3 will introduce Jean Grey, known as the Phoenix, as one of its new characters in Marvel Rivals. Like earlier character launches, she will expand the Team-Up potential in the game, and Blade is expected to follow in Season 3.5. Given that almost 70% of Team-Up abilities have changed since the game’s release, players can look forward to ongoing adjustments with each major update.

Which Team-Up Abilities Are Being Removed?

Farewell to Certain Character Combinations

In Season 3, only two Team-Up abilities will be retired, which means many existing synergies will remain intact. The abilities being removed are:

  • Storming Ignition (The Human Torch + Storm)
  • ESU Alumnus (Spider-Man + Squirrel Girl)

The decision to remove these Team-Ups is unexpected, particularly since the ability between Storm and The Human Torch was activated only when both characters used their Ultimate moves together—something that rarely occurred. However, they were important in the aerial character meta that emerged with Ultron’s introduction in Season 2.5. This change may aim to lessen the need for multiple flying characters in a winning team in Marvel Rivals.

The Spider-Man and Squirrel Girl Team-Up isn’t as impactful since it was rarely seen in matches, likely leading to its removal. Unfortunately, both characters now lack a Team-Up option. On the bright side, Storm still has a Team-Up with Jeff the Land Shark, so the three removed abilities will be replaced with new ones in Season 3.

Encouraging Collaboration Among Characters

While there aren’t as many new Team-Ups as in Season 2.5, two new character synergies will debut with the start of Season 3. One involves the new character Phoenix, a ranged Duelist joining with the season’s launch. Importantly, Phoenix serves as the anchor for this Team-Up, facilitating a new ability for another character while also providing a minor stat boost.

While many Team-Ups from Season 2 will still be available in Season 3, be prepared for potential removals in Season 3.5. Since these new seasons will last only two months instead of three, fresh Team-Ups will be introduced more quickly.

The following table outlines every new Team-Up coming in Season 3, along with the characters involved and their functions:

Team-Up

Character 1

Character 2

Description

Primal Flame

Phoenix

Wolverine

With Phoenix as the anchor, Wolverine’s “Feral Leap” ability gains new features. When used, an aura of flames surrounds Wolverine, damaging nearby enemies for a short duration, while his attacks receive Lifesteal, converting damage into Bonus Health.

Ever-Burning Bond

The Human Torch

Spider-Man

The Human Torch as the anchor provides Spider-Man with a new ability, allowing him to shoot a burning web that attaches to enemies as a Spider-Tracer. Enemies hit with this burning Tracer take damage over time, and Spider-Man can deploy it like his other Tracer web balls.

Both new Team-Ups complement existing character abilities, enhancing their toolkit. For Spider-Man, this enables him to create potent fire-based combos, reminiscent of how Venom once granted him significant area damage. Wolverine’s Lifesteal feature is bound to be a formidable addition against enemy Vanguards, but time will tell how effective these new Team-Ups will be.

Every Existing Team-Up That’s Been Updated in Season 3

New Characters Join to Create Triple Hero Team-Ups

In contrast to last season’s Team-Up alterations, two characters are being added to existing combinations to form dynamic triple hero teams. The Team-Ups receiving a new member are:

  • Symbiote Shenanigans (Venom + Jeff the Land Shark)
  • Stark Protocol (Ultron + Iron Man)

Symbiote Shenanigans will now include Hela, the goddess of death, whose connection to the symbiote god Knull in Season 3 is reflected in a new ability. When paired with the anchor Venom, Hela’s Soul Drainer Hel Sphere will launch symbiote tentacles that attach to nearby enemies, slowing them down as long as they stay within the orb’s vicinity.

Meanwhile, the Team-Up of Iron Man and Ultron will now feature Squirrel Girl. Paired with Iron Man, Squirrel Girl will gain a nanotech gauntlet, acting as a distinct ability. She can deploy a squirrel using the gauntlet to home in on an enemy, causing an explosive damage effect upon contact.

This addition of new characters to existing Team-Ups will create unique team compositions, with both abilities designed to counteract the strength of flying characters. While it’s uncertain whether these changes will lead to a new meta in Marvel Rivals, they will certainly keep the gameplay fresh and encourage more collaboration among various characters than ever before.
