Having some helpful tips for Alan Wake 2 will make your journey through the Pacific Northwest as Saga or the Dark Place as Alan much easier. After spending over 30 hours playing this game, I’ve put together 13 key tips. These cover everything from combat strategies and increasing your inventory to exploring, completing missions, and more. This game can be quite complex, so these tips will help you stay safe and make the most of your adventure.
1. Use Light to Fight Enemies
Almost every enemy you face is affected by the Dark Presence. Whether battling the Taken as Saga or the Fade Outs as Alan, you can’t hurt them until you clear away the darkness surrounding them. Hold R1/RB to focus your flashlight on an enemy, temporarily pushing back the shadow so you can land some shots. Items like flares, flashbangs, and propane tanks are powerful but limited.
2. Aim for Weak Points for More Damage
To save ammunition, target the weak spots on enemies. Small foes can be staggered with quick headshots in succession. Larger enemies have glowing red orbs you can hit for big damage, but it’s tricky to land these shots. Remember to dodge heavy attacks using L1/LB to give yourself room.
3. Explore Everywhere for Supplies and Upgrades
There are hidden stash locations scattered throughout the areas you explore as Saga. These can include supplies, weapon upgrades, and even nursery rhymes that give you stat buffs. Take your time and look carefully for these secrets as they can really help your progress.
4. Find Words of Power to Boost Abilities
Throughout the game, you can discover Words of Power by pointing your flashlight at lines of text around the map. Once activated, you can visit the Writer’s Room at any time to spend upgrade points. These words improve your abilities and can make a big difference in how you survive.
5. Remember to Upgrade Your Weapons
Ammo can be scarce in Alan Wake 2, so it’s smart to upgrade your weapons whenever possible. You can do this at workbenches in the Mind Place, using Manuscript Fragments found in various areas. Upgraded weapons are more effective, helping you conserve your limited ammunition.
6. Change Your Reality by Switching between the Two Realities
The story unfolds across two different worlds: the Pacific Northwest with Saga and the Dark Place with Alan. You can switch between them after completing Act 2 of each story. Look for the Janitor’s mop and bucket in safe rooms to change realities, which can open new paths and reveal hidden secrets.
7. Manage Your Inventory Carefully
Space in your inventory is limited. Keep an eye on what you carry and look out for upgrades that expand your inventory slots. Exploring thoroughly can net you extra batteries, ammo, and healing items. You can also stash items in a Shoebox found at Break Rooms to save space.
8. Read Manuscript Pages for Extra Story Details
While exploring, you’ll find manuscript pages that expand the story. Some are given automatically, while others are hidden in certain areas. Reading them in the Mind Place gives you extra insight into upcoming events, past events, or hidden lore that can deepen your understanding of the game.
9. Watch for Maps to Navigate Faster
Without a map, wandering in new locations can be confusing. When entering a new area, look for maps pinned to walls—these are easy to overlook but very helpful. A good map makes it easier to find your way and locate collectibles or objectives more quickly.
10. Be Ready to Backtrack as the Environment Changes
Areas in the game will change over time. When you finish a chapter, the environment may shift, opening new paths or revealing secrets. Saga’s surroundings will often flood or reshape after certain story milestones, so don’t hesitate to return to previous locations using Saga’s car.
11. Use the Case Board to Track Progress
The Case Board in the Mind Place is vital forSaga’s investigations. It keeps track of clues, side quests, and objectives. You can add new information as you find it, helping you connect dots and plan your next moves more effectively.
12. Keep an Eye on Alan’s Plot Board
Playing as Alan Wake, you’ll have access to the Plot Board in the Writer’s Room. This tool helps you manipulate story elements in the environment—solving puzzles like how to complete the ritual. Changing plot points on this board can unblock paths and help you progress.
13. Experiment with the Angel Light for Hidden Areas
The Angel Lamp is a new device that lets you rewrite reality. Using it can reveal hidden areas and resources, and unlock new Echoes and Words of Power. It also holds up to four charges of light, drawn from bright spots in the environment. When you see a reticule appear, you can deploy or drain light into the lamp to warp reality and find secrets, including special items like the Dark Place shotgun.
By keeping these tips in mind, you’ll have a smoother experience with Alan Wake 2 and be better prepared for whatever horrors await.
