In Revenge of the Savage Planet, you return to explore a vibrant and abundant alien world filled with charming but perilous creatures. Previously, you were dispatched to an unfamiliar planet in the first installment, Journey to the Savage Planet, by your employer. In this follow-up, however, your mission is to seek revenge on the same employer who recently terminated your contract after sending you to a new star system.
With the goal of returning to Earth, you’ll need to navigate and survive in this alien landscape while uncovering its secrets. The environment is rich with diverse creatures, caves, flora, and mountains, all of which will aid you in your quest for vengeance. Your chance for revenge is set to launch as a day-one release on Game Pass.
Scan Anything and Everything
Don’t Leave a Stone Unturned
Whether you’re on your own or playing cooperatively, scanning does more than reveal details about your environment. It can also help you unlock upgrades for your gear. To start scanning, simply enter scan mode by pressing “TAB” on your keyboard. While in scan mode, hold the left mouse button over the items you want to scan.
Once the scanning is complete, details will appear on your screen. You can wander around while scanning, but be careful—running will exit scanning mode. Items that haven’t been scanned will glow orange, whereas blue indicates those you’ve already scanned, which is different from the orange outline visible when hovering over objects.
Be sure to scan everything, from creatures to plants. Don’t restrict your scanning to eye-level since many items can be found up high or down low. This process is essential for upgrades and will help you identify vulnerable points in creatures. This knowledge is crucial for survival, as many creatures may become hostile without warning. Maintain a safe distance while scanning to reduce the risk of being attacked.
Survey and Scan Frequently
Be Obsessed and Aware
While it’s tempting to take in the sights without worrying about scanning everything, conducting surveys and scans is vital if you want to achieve your revenge goals. These are two distinct mechanics in the game that work together.
Shooting clusters of fragile purple crystals can help you access other materials. In the initial area, these crystals encase an orange goo fruit that boosts your health and stamina.
When you survey an area by pressing “Z,” points of interest will be highlighted, revealing resources. You can also track mission locations through surveying; if you’ve scanned creatures, weak points will be marked. Surveying shows your current location, acting like a guide to navigate your journey.
Scanning, on the other hand, provides insights about the object you examine. This ties back into surveying, allowing you to scan a creature to learn its weaknesses and then highlight those weak spots with surveying to defeat them more quickly. This is especially beneficial against tougher enemies. By combining these two mechanics, you’ll upgrade your abilities faster and improve your chances of survival.
Complete Side Missions
Take Advantage of Upgrading

Depending on your approach, you might be focused on completing the main storyline quickly. However, side missions are crucial for successfully finishing many primary objectives and can also reveal new upgrades, making survival easier.
Unlocking as many upgrades and abilities as you can will help to moderate the game’s difficulty. Playing in cooperative mode can help you finish tasks faster, allowing for quicker upgrades. If you encounter connection issues with the internet or Game Pass cloud streaming, consider playing in split-screen mode instead.
This is especially significant when tackling and capturing creatures. While you can manage without upgrades, it’s much easier with them. Press “J” to open a menu where you can navigate to the Journal tab to see your ongoing missions. This can also be accessed via the printer.
Unlock Teleport Locations
The Faster You Travel, the More You Discover
Teleport locations are essential for navigating these alien planets. Traveling on foot would take an immense amount of time, especially if you find yourself retracing your steps. Fast travel is a huge time saver, particularly during missions, enabling you to upgrade more quickly.
Exiting and reentering an area will cause enemies and resources to respawn.
If you die, you’ll need to return to where it happened to claim any dropped items. Like many survival games, death results in losing any advancements made since your last visit to your habitat. If you haven’t revisited your habitat for some time and die, use the teleport locations to quickly get back to your death site and collect your dropped items. The items will be contained within a brown box near your last location.
Always Return to Your Habitat
Returning to Your Habitat Helps Avoid Frustration

Since you’ll lose any items in your inventory upon dying, it’s crucial to retrieve them from your death site. To prevent unnecessary frustration, make a habit of returning to your habitat frequently. You’ll naturally return often anyway, as you’ll need to purchase new items for your missions. Establishing this routine early on will save you from feeling overwhelmed as you progress through the game.
Moreover, there’s always something to do in your habitat. Here, you can purchase upgrades by exchanging minerals, conduct research on creatures you’ve captured, or just decorate your space. There’s always a task waiting for you back at your habitat, which also helps you avoid the hassle of backtracking to retrieve lost inventory—an efficient strategy in Revenge of the Savage Planet.
