In Anno 117: Pax Romana, peasants won’t always be rebellious. As long as they have their basic needs met, people are happy to work hard and help your economy grow.
There are many small ways to make sure each resident lives well, from providing food and shelter to creating parks and social areas for them to visit. Here’s what you need to know to keep your island full of happy and healthy citizens who are eager to live and work in your expanding city.
How To Increase Happiness
If you ignore your residents’ happiness, they might start rebelling, destroying property or striking. If it gets worse, the city can become very expensive because you’ll need to repair damage and replace workers who leave due to unrest.
Your residents’ basic needs are the first thing you can control. When these needs are satisfied, they can flourish and work efficiently. To see what each person needs, click on their home. Different types of residents have different needs, and as they advance, their requirements become more complex. Common needs include:
- Food
- Public services
- Fashion
- Household items
- Marvels
Providing residents with what they need—whether through trade or local production—keeps them satisfied. Once their needs are fully met, they can be upgraded to higher tiers.
Upgrading residents improves your island’s attributes, but it also means losing some workforce, which might require upgrading lower-tier residents or building more housing to replace them.
It’s easy to overlook how building placement affects residents. The layout of your city is key to preventing underlying unrest. Residential zones should be near public service buildings like Bardic Hearths or Theaters—these help residents relax and enjoy themselves. Additionally, residents want to feel safe, so constructing Custodes and Watchtowers throughout the city is a good idea.
Just like city planners today, keep industrial and residential areas separate to reduce unpleasant smells and waste near homes. When adding resource-producing buildings, check their impact zones to avoid negative effects on nearby homes. Buildings like renderers that produce smelly resources, such as lard, can lower happiness and fire safety ratings if placed too close.
Buildings that negatively affect health also hurt happiness; no one feels good when sickness keeps spreading from nearby pig farms or charcoal burners. Moving factories away from homes improves residents’ well-being immediately.
How To Increase Health
In busy cities, diseases can spread fast to residents. To keep outbreaks under control and maintain high health, focus on boosting your island’s overall health rating.
Basic needs like Reed Shoes, Olive Oil, and Soap also support better health. Check the health stats using the heart icon on the top bar to see what’s affecting your town positively or negatively.
The simplest way to improve health is to keep resource production buildings away from homes. Remember, health and happiness are linked—building structures with negative effects close to residents will lower both.
Buildings like charcoal burners, pig farms, or other pollution sources can cause health problems. To boost health, construct facilities such as Medici for disease treatment, Latrines to improve sanitation, and Shrines dedicated to your deity.
Maintaining a balanced city layout—placing industrial buildings away from homes and ensuring positive public services—keeps your residents happy and healthy, fostering a thriving community.
