Of all the characters returning in Hades 2, Hypnos is probably the most mysterious. Once a very talkative figure, Hypnos now stays in a constant sleep. During Early Access, players tried to wake Hypnos many times, but most efforts didn’t work. However, with the official release of version 1.0, you can finally wake Hypnos from his magical sleep.
While Hypnos remains one of the gods in Hades 2, he doesn’t give out traditional Boons like the other gods. Instead, you find him in the Crossroads, the main hub you return to after each death or successful run. He won’t say much, but if you manage to wake him up at some point, he can give you great rewards.
How to Wake Up Hypnos
Getting Hypnos to wake up isn’t simple. It involves gathering certain ingredients and casting magical Incantations. The first step is not just talking to Hypnos, but encouraging him to give clues about his condition. These clues become part of a side quest called Soundest of Sleepers. When you start this quest, you need to gift Hypnos two units of Nectar to get your first hints—these gifts cause him to speak a little. Nectar can be bought from Charon or the Wretched Broker, or found naturally during your runs through the Underworld.
You’ll also need to find Poppy Seeds. Growing Poppy plants in your garden at the Crossroads triggers the next step, which involves meeting an NPC named Madea. She’s an alchemist from the Ephyra area who knows how to wake Hypnos. Madea gives you blueprints for three different Incantations, each necessary to wake Hypnos. You must cast these Incantations in the correct order, and each requires specific ingredients.
Talking to Madea after each Incantation will help you unlock the next one. Each spell uses different materials, like Molly, Mandrake, Poppy Flowers, Shaderot, and Soot. Using each Incantation rewards you with Dream Vapor, which you can give to Hypnos in an attempt to wake him up and learn more about his sleep.
Finding Soot for the Final Incantation
The last Incantation might seem easy, but Soot is a rare material. You can’t find it until you finish the main story, defeat the final boss, and unlock the epilogue. After reaching the epilogue, head deeper into Tartarus and talk to Hades—who’s now free from Chronos’ prison—and give him Nectar. Hades will then give you the Soot and a special Keepsake. Even if you haven’t unlocked the last Incantation, you can still get Soot from Hades during your epilogue runs.
Once you have the required items, return to the Crossroads and perform the End to Dumbest Slumber Incantation. This will give you the strongest Dream Vapor, which you give to Hypnos. Doing so will let you peek inside his mind, learn more about his sleep, and eventually wake him up.
Waking Hypnos rewards you with two Nightmare items—special endgame currency used to upgrade your weapons. Hypnos will then return to his role in the House of Hades, marking a satisfying revival of a beloved character in Hades 2. Fans of the series will be pleased to see Hypnos finally wake up and take his place once again.
