This console generation has been challenging for gamers, but we did get a bit of good news with the option of free upgrades to next-gen versions. This means you don’t have to buy a game twice if you’re moving from PS4 to PS5 or Xbox One to Xbox Series X/S.
Nintendo also offers something similar. However, it can be a bit complicated and often comes with a cost. In most cases, you won’t need to purchase the entire game again, but be aware that this doesn’t apply to Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake, as it doesn’t offer a free upgrade.
Be Careful Which Version Of Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake You Buy If You’re On Switch
The FAQ on the game’s website points out that if you have a Switch 2, you need to buy the specific Switch 2 version to access next-gen features. If you play the original Switch version on a Switch 2, it will perform like it does on the original console.
The FAQ clearly states that there is no way to upgrade from the original Switch version. It says, “No, there is no upgrade path currently available or planned. Please buy your copy for whichever system you would like to play it on.”
Moreover, a Switch 2 version will not work on the original Switch, so be cautious if you haven’t upgraded yet.
This situation reminds us of how things were before the current generation. It’s disappointing to see the industry taking a step back. Free next-gen upgrades are one of the few helpful practices for consumers today, and game publishers still profit from at least one sale. This might encourage players to consider upgrading their consoles, as they won’t have to start their game library from scratch—many upgraded games will already be available to them.
Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake is set to launch on October 30, 2025. It will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2.
