A newly released PS5 remake of a popular PS3 action game has received a mix of critical reviews.
What PS5 remake is causing divided opinions?
Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties, a remake of the 2009 PS3 title Yakuza 3 along with a brand new DLC, is scheduled for release on February 11, 2026, for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch. The remake features a fresh visual overhaul of the original game, and while it has garnered strong recommendations from some players, reviews are notably split on whether it measures up to the original 2009 version.
On the review aggregator site OpenCritic, the game holds a critic score of 75, with a 72% “critics recommend” percentage. Many reviews remain divided over whether this remake lives up to its predecessor.
In a 7 out of 10 review from IGN, Tristan Ogilvie describes the game as “another enjoyable mix of gritty drama and quirky sidestories,” but notes that overall, it doesn’t feel as well-rounded as the series’ more polished entries.
Nintendo Life’s Oliver Reynolds, who rated it 6 out of 10, considers it “a fair entry in the series,” yet criticizes it for “poor pacing” and a recasting controversy that seemed unnecessary.
DualShockers’ Usama Mehmood gave the game a 7.5 out of 10, expressing ambivalence, noting that while it has moments of brilliance, it’s also quite polarizing. He remarked that not every black sheep in the series needs a remake.
Despite the mixed reviews, some fans found the remake to be a worthy addition to the franchise. On our sister site, ComingSoon, Tyler Treese awarded it a 9 out of 10, praising it for being “much better than the original.”
He highlighted the new Dark Ties expansion, which offers a compelling story about one of the series’ most intriguing villains, along with a wealth of new side content. Treese concluded that, although a remake of Yakuza 4 might seem imminent, fans can currently enjoy what he describes as one of the series’ best games, beautifully updated.
