Understanding Chinese History
Most people only know basic facts about Chinese history, like key events, important names, or the names of some dynasties. For example, Wuchang: Fallen Feathers happens during the fall of the Ming Dynasty and the start of the Qing Dynasty.
Which period do people usually know the most about? It’s the early Three Kingdoms period, which was over 1,000 years before the game’s story. Many characters from that time wanted to leave their mark, and one of the most legendary is Zhao Yun. Here’s how to find him and how to finally defeat him.
Preparation for Zhao Yun
How to Find Zhao Yun
Zhao Yun is not a required boss and easy to miss. To fight him, you need to finish the White-Robed Elder’s questline, which ends at the Tomb in the Avian Dwelling after you help him defeat his Inner Demon. When you talk to him here, he will tell you to return once you find the truth. It’s vague, but it will make sense later.
You can go back to the Tomb after entering the Bo Capital, but before defeating the final boss, the Demon of Obsession. Just enter the Tomb and the fight will start automatically.
Note: Since you don’t talk to Zhao Yun before the fight, he won’t appear in your quest list in the menu. You just have to remember what he told you.
Before the Fight
Make sure your defenses are strong before battling Zhao Yun. He mainly does physical damage, like Slash and Stab attacks. Some of his moves also deal Fire damage and can cause Frostbite buildup. Focus on building a character that reduces these damage types.
During the fight, Zhao Yun is very fast. Using defensive spells like Echo of the Bo Magus can help, as he often deflects or dodges slower spells. It’s better to use magic that protects you rather than attacks that take a lot of time to cast.
Tip: When using Echo of the Bo Magus, you can’t deflect while it’s active. Dodge instead to avoid damage.
Bring a weapon with deflection if you have one. This can help during certain parts of the fight. Also, choose pendants that boost your defenses or improve your blocks and counters. The Disciplinary Force Benediction and Impale Benediction are good options for extra damage late in the game.
Zhao Yun’s Strengths and Weaknesses
Zhao Yun’s Strengths
He is extremely fast and can cover the battlefield quickly. He’s capable of inflicting Frostbite and Fire damage, but only with specific attacks. Regular attacks do not do these types of damage.
Zhao Yun has a deadly move called Aerial Bulwark. When he holds his spear defensively, he blocks attacks and then quickly counters with a powerful attack. Sometimes he automatically goes into this stance after a deflection, which can punish your counterattacks.
Weaknesses
He has honed his skills over 1,000 years, so he’s very skilled. However, he is somewhat vulnerable due to a weak posture. You can fill his stagger meter faster and knock him down with charged heavy attacks like those from a Longsword or Axe. Keep a ranged spell handy to help fill his stagger meter even from a distance.
Zhao Yun’s Moveset
Phase One
Zhao Yun’s first phase includes numerous attacks, all with different counters.
Attack | Description | Counter |
---|---|---|
Running Stab | Zhao Yun runs long distances trying to stab you. Followed by quick moves like Turnstile Strikes or Stab and Slash Flurry. | Deflect it. Don’t block the first hit, then deflect the follow-up to stagger him. Count on this to get a few hits in. |
Aerial Bulwark | Sometimes after attacks or deflections, Zhao Yun raises his spear defensively, deflecting attacks and dodging back. | Bait this with ranged attacks. Dodge or circle behind him to avoid triggering the defense. |
Impaling Leap | He leaps into the air to stab you—an unmissable grab attack. Dodging is your only option. | Dodge directly into the attack or backwards. Stay close to be ready for follow-up attacks. |
Whirlwind Spins | Performs quick, wide spins with his spear, advancing toward you. | Dodging is best, or deflect if you prefer. Watch for counterattacks. |
Turnstile Strikes | After a Running Stab, he spins rapidly with his spear, ending with a slam. | Deflect the spins and attack after the slam, which is less protected. |
Phase Two
In the second phase, Zhao Yun shows new moves and becomes more aggressive. His move set expands but doesn’t remove his earlier attacks; instead, he combines them with new skills.
Attack | Description | Counter |
---|---|---|
Sword Unveiling | He unsheathes his sword with a flash of wind, knocking back and damaging you. | Keep your distance until the attack finishes. |
Spectral Double | He can summon an additional spectral copy that performs wide attacks, but it doesn’t chase you. | Stay away from the double’s path to avoid damage. |
Wind Waves | He unleashes a flurry of wind attacks from his sword at close or far range. | Get behind him, or use a charged attack to deal damage safely. |
Sword Stab and Wind Blast | A quick stab followed by a large wind blast damaging everything around him. | Dodge immediately after the stab. Keep practicing timing to avoid the blast. |
How to Win Against Zhao Yun
The Fight
Managing your muscle memory is key. Zhao Yun rarely leaves openings and is quick to counter. He often follows deflections with a move called Aerial Bulwark, which can punish aggressive players.
Use deflection mainly for defense. When you deflect successfully, take the chance to prepare your weapon, heal, or set a shield. If he doesn’t stagger from your attack, follow with your own hits.
Echo of the Bo Magus is very useful here. It helps you defeat many of his attacks without getting knocked down. But be cautious: he can shatter your shield quickly, so keep dodging and pressing him carefully.
Fill his stagger meter when possible to set up an especially powerful attack. Use projectiles like Echo of Honglan to keep him vulnerable while he’s away.
In the second phase, Zhao Yun uses his spectral double to punish close range. Keep advancing. If you avoid the first hit of the double, it will follow a fixed path rather than chasing you, so don’t be afraid to move toward him.
The Rewards
Defeating Zhao Yun grants you several rewards:
- The Shu Army Board – gives access to Zhao Yun’s spear if you take it to Tao Qing.
- The Echo of Zhao Yun spell – unleash a destructive jade blade that damages everything nearby, especially your Inner Demon.
- The Cyan Feather Chisel – allows you to unlock the final Tempering slot.
After victory, revisit the tomb and perform the Worship gesture at Zhao Yun’s gravestone to obtain his armor, the Loyalty set.
