Although many islands may appear similar, their placement varies with each new game, making it tricky to locate specific islands on the map. Fortunately, most resources are available on several islands, so it’s beneficial to explore them all for crafting materials.

Charcoal is one such resource you can collect from various floating islands, but finding and gathering it can be tricky because it’s often hidden among the dense vegetation. This guide will help you successfully gather charcoal.

How to Obtain Charcoal in Aloft

To collect charcoal, you must find it on an island. Look for the distinctive black stumps protruding from the ground. When you get close, an axe icon will appear, indicating that you will need an axe to gather charcoal. You can craft an axe by following these steps in your inventory’s crafting tab:

• Combine two stones to create a sharp stone.
• Add the sharp stone to a piece of wood.
• Hit the craft button to make your axe.

If you’re short on materials, you can easily find stones and wood on any island. Stones can either be picked up from the ground or mined from larger rocks using a pickaxe. You can gather wood by collecting branches from trees. Once you’ve crafted an axe, simply hit the black stumps to add charcoal to your inventory.

How to Utilize Charcoal in Aloft

Charcoal serves multiple purposes and is essential for various crafting recipes. You can mix it with dirty water to create clean water or combine it with wood to fashion a torch. Additionally, to sketch structures using a sketchbook, you’ll need charcoal and a piece of paper in your inventory.

On a workbench, you can create even more items using charcoal, including sketchbooks. It’s also useful for igniting campfires, where you can cook numerous dishes using a cooking plate.
