Goodbye, everyone! That wraps up season 1 of It: Welcome to Derry — or Chapter One, as the end credits call it, hinting that more episodes are likely on the way.
In the intense finale, Lilly, Ronnie, and Marge team up to rescue Will from Pennywise, the creepy clown. Meanwhile, the Hanlons work with Rose, Taniel, and a gradually confused Hallorann to try to save him as well. Their efforts lead to a confrontation on the outskirts of Derry, with General Shaw and his soldiers closing in to face Pennywise. Since this is a prequel, we probably knew good would win, with It retreating back into its hiding spot to keep Derry peaceful for the next 27 years.
Thanks to Andy Muschietti’s films, we already know that the next time Pennywise will return is in late 1988, when George Denbrough is killed trying to save his paper boat. So, where could the story go from here? We explore that below. Although no official renewal has been announced, the show is among HBO Max’s top premieres alongside House of the Dragon and The Last of Us, so more episodes seem inevitable. While we wait, here’s everything you need to know about a potential second season, including plot ideas, possible release dates, and returning cast members.
Currently, it’s tough to guess when It: Welcome to Derry season 2 might hit the screen, but we’ll keep you updated. Filming began in May 2023 with a tentative finish scheduled for December. However, production was paused from July 2023 until February 2024 due to SAG-AFTRA strikes, finally wrapping up in August 2024.
On December 11, Stephen King himself shared on Threads that the final episode of season 1 would “blow your mind.” The fact that he added “(this year)” after “episode” caught our attention—hinting at a possible surprise season 2 in 2026. It’s a long shot, but nostalgia for yearly releases makes us dream of its return.
As for a second season trailer, none has been released yet. We’ll share it as soon as it drops online.
Right now, setting a release date for It: Welcome to Derry season 2 is just guesswork, but we expect that once filming resumes, more concrete info will emerge.
Season 1 started filming in May 2023, aiming for a late-2023 release. Due to strikes, the schedule shifted, and filming finished in August 2024. Given the delays, a second season’s debut might not happen until late 2025 or 2026—if it’s renewed at all.
Regarding the story, show creator Andy Muschietti indicated that season 2 would be set around 1935, after exploring the past during season 1’s flashbacks. He revealed plans for a three-season story arc, with the second chapter focusing on the Bradley Gang Massacre—a tragic event involving a violent confrontation between bank robbers and Derry residents. This event is rooted in the book, where the gang is ambushed after attempting a heist, resulting in many deaths. The supposed skeletons of the gang were found in the season 2 finale, complete with cash and vintage Tommy guns.
Expect more familiar faces and new characters, but since season 2 takes place nearly 30 years before season 1, the original kid cast, such as Lilly, Will, Ronnie, and Marge, are unlikely to return. Their storylines probably conclude with season 1 and its flashbacks. However, flashforwards aren’t impossible—since the show previously hinted at future events, the creators have left that door open.
Characters like Rose (Kimberly Norris-Guerrero) and Ingrid Gray (Madeleine Stowe), who are Derry locals, might make appearances, especially considering their roles in past flashbacks. On the other hand, Pennywise actor Bill Skarsgård is certain to come back—after all, It wouldn’t be an It story without him.
As for whether there will be a third season, it’s still uncertain. The show hasn’t been officially renewed, but considering the positive reception, HBO is probably eager to let Muschietti finish his planned trilogy. He previously hinted that season 3 would explore 1908—highlighting the early days of It’s presence in Derry, including the origin of Pennywise after a clown performer was killed nearby, with It taking his face.
A third season could also delve into the Kitchener Ironworks explosion, a disastrous event from the early 1900s that resulted in many deaths and was only briefly touched upon in the book. This storyline aligns with Muschietti’s vision and would expand the mythology further.
It: Welcome to Derry is currently streaming on HBO Max. Keep an eye out for more updates on season 2, including trailers and official announcements.
