Monster Hunter Wilds: Facing the Challenge of Rey Dau
Monster Hunter Wilds showcases a variety of formidable monsters, with Rey Dau being a standout. This enormous winged wyvern utilizes lightning to deter aspiring hunters, making it a tough adversary. Its thunderous strikes and explosive attacks can eliminate your character in an instant. However, by studying Rey Dau’s movement patterns, you can uncover weaknesses to take advantage of.
While you might stumble upon Rey Dau simply by exploring the map, it will inevitably confront you as you advance through the main story quests. Beating Alpha Doshaguma will lead you to Rey Dau after completing a few more missions. Make sure to gather strong parts for upgraded gear to better prepare for this encounter.
Where to Encounter Rey Dau
Rey Dau can appear naturally in the narrative or during lightning storms in the Windward Plains biome. This new weather dynamic in Monster Hunter Wilds means different areas will undergo weather fluctuations over time. Rey Dau emerges to hunt when storms intensify, casting shadows over the Plains and generating sporadic lightning strikes.
You can check the weather conditions for different regions by navigating to the "Forecast" section within the "Environment Overview" on your map.
Fortunately, you don’t have to wait for a lightning storm to fight Rey Dau. After defeating this creature once during the main storyline, you can rechallenge it anytime by scheduling a hunt with Alma. This will adjust the Plains’ weather to mimic when Rey Dau typically appears.
Strategies to Defeat Rey Dau (Phase 1)
Evade Lightning Strikes and Exploit Vulnerabilities
Rey Dau is a Winged Wyvern capable of inflicting Thunder damage, so it’s wise to don gear that provides Thunder Resistance. Certain armor or items can mitigate the elemental damage from Rey Dau’s onslaught, giving you a better chance of survival in battle.
Target Rey Dau’s three major weak points for extra damage:
- Horns (Breakable)
- Wings
- Tail (Breakable)
Severing a monster’s tail allows you to carve additional materials, so aim to cut that part by repeatedly slashing at it during your fight.
When you engage in combat, Rey Dau will use its wings like swords, striking at your character. The wyvern gathers lightning in its horns and wings to unleash potent attacks supercharged with Thunder damage. The following table highlights some of Rey Dau’s most dangerous moves and provides tips on how to counter them:
Attack | Description | Counter Tactic |
---|---|---|
Lightning Beam | Rey Dau charges its horns and launches a bolt of lightning towards you. | Watch for the ground glowing blue before the attack and roll away to evade damage. |
Winged Slash | The creature raises a wing to make a slashing motion, leaving a trail of electricity. | You can counter with certain weapons or dodge by rolling to the side opposite the attack. |
Horn Thrust | Rey Dau thrusts its head forward for a headbutting attack. | Block, counter, or evade this attack using your weapon’s unique abilities. |
Leaping Slam | The wyvern jumps into the air and then slams down, creating an area of Thunder damage. | Dodge forward or block to avoid the attack. |
Supercharge Railcannon | Rey Dau powers up and fires a powerful lightning beam, causing widespread Thunder damage. | When you see it plant its wings to charge the attack, move left or right to avoid the explosion. |
The largest attacks leave Rey Dau exposed to strikes from your weapon. For instance, after launching the Supercharge Railcannon, Rey Dau takes a while to recover, providing an ideal opportunity for counter-attacks.
Your assaults can also lead to Open Wounds on Rey Dau. You can inflict additional damage by identifying these wounds in Focus Mode and striking them with specific Focus Strike attacks. Adequately damaging an Open Wound might stagger Rey Dau.
Rey Dau can perform many attacks while airborne, presenting a challenge for melee hunters. To counter this, you can use a Flashpod from your Slinger or activate environmental traps to bring Rey Dau crashing down, giving you the perfect window to unleash significant damage.
How to Defeat Rey Dau (Phase 2)
Track the Monster Back to Its Nest
After sufficiently wounding Rey Dau, it will retreat to its resting place, flying away from the battle. You’ll need to track it back to its nest using Scoutflies or by following the monster’s location on your map. When you face Rey Dau again, expect its attacks to be enhanced.
Rey Dau’s attacks now unleash delayed Thunder damage explosions on impact. For instance, after a Winged Slash, the ground where its wing struck will glow and then explode, punishing any players too aggressive with their attacks during this brief recovery window.
As with all hunts, you will have a limited time to subdue Rey Dau, so employ every tactic you can to finish the hunt quickly. When you successfully defeat Rey Dau during a quest, make sure to carve any remaining parts for your primary rewards.
Rewards from Defeating Rey Dau
Obtain Unique Materials for Gear
Taking down Rey Dau grants you various parts that can be carved from its broken sections. Cutting off its tail yields extra items, and even more materials will drop if you destroy its horns. Plus, landing hits on Open Wounds in Focus Mode generates additional loot, so strive to hit all of Rey Dau’s weak spots for maximum rewards.
Some materials you might acquire from a victorious hunt include:
- Rey Dau Carapace
- Rey Dau Scale (+)
- Rey Dau Bolthorn (Horn Break only)
- Rey Dau Boltwingtalon
- Rey Dau Plate
- Rey Dau Boltgem (the rarest drop)
The Rey Dau Boltgem is the prized reward for conquering this fierce foe, and all parts collected can be crucial for crafting new weapons and armor. Players who defeat Rey Dau in Monster Hunter Wilds are likely to unlock recipes for gear that enhance Thunder Attack or Resistance, along with unique skills associated with the Winged Wyvern.
With determination and strategic preparation, you’ll rise to the challenge and conquer Rey Dau!
