The Outer Worlds 2‘s violence depends on how players choose to approach situations. One clear example is Brigadier Montelli. He appears as the main boss at the Vox Relay Station. Going there early in the game can turn him into a tough, damage-absorbing enemy that uses up all your resources. However, if you’re prepared properly, you can find a way to handle him without fighting.
Deciding whether to be peaceful in this part is a personal choice. By the time you face Montelli, you might have already seen him wrongly execute soldiers for crimes they didn’t commit. Some players might feel it’s fair to do the same to him. Additionally, your choices here will influence the rewards you receive.
What Happens If You Kill Brigadier Montelli
The Hard-Line Approach
If you’re not prepared or don’t have the right skills to talk your way out of it, you’ll need to fight Montelli. This battle involves reducing a large health bar while avoiding gunfire and electrical attacks. Using weapons that cause status effects, like electricity, can help you survive and weaken him faster.
Once Montelli is defeated, you’ll earn:
- 300 XP
- Chainspark Cannon
- Officer Regalia
The Officer Regalia isn’t special, but the Chainspark Cannon is a powerful weapon. Its Chain Lightning ability can quickly take out groups of enemies, especially those weak to electricity.
What Happens If You Spare Brigadier Montelli
Do Corbin a Favor
To save Montelli, start by talking to Marshal Corbin at the Vox Relay. Even if Corbin isn’t fond of you because of previous events, you can persuade him using different dialogue options. If you have the Writ from Vigilant Hogarth, you can show it—though you can also convince him without admitting guilt in the Horizon Point incident.
After getting Corbin’s support, access Montelli’s terminal and read the files. During your conversation with Montelli, choose calm, non-confrontational options. When given the chance, ask, “These extreme measures weren’t your idea, were they, Montelli?” You’ll need a Speech skill of 5 to persuade him to stop the violence.
If successful, you won’t get XP, but you’ll still earn:
- Chainspark Cannon
- Officer Regalia
Plus, Montelli will share valuable information, and Corbin’s attitude toward you will improve.
Why You Should Consider Sparing Montelli
Nothing to Lose But XP
If your Speech skill requirements are met, sparing Montelli is a safe choice. The XP reward is nice, but you can always make up for it by hunting creatures like raptidons. Since the Chainspark Cannon and Officer Regalia are obtainable regardless of your decision, there’s little reason not to keep both Montelli and Corbin alive.
Of course, killing Montelli is still an option if it feels right for your story or gameplay style. If you’re not focused on improving your Speech skill, this choice might not be worth altering your build.
In either case, you’ll walk away with decent gear. Ultimately, how you handle Montelli in Outer Worlds 2 is a decision based on role-playing preferences and what makes sense for your character.
